Why read Government Documents?

Government Documents are publications that originate or are sponsored by a government agency at the local, state, national or international level. They can be books, pamphlets, microfiche, CD-ROMs, DVDs, or on the Internet (generally has URL extension of “.gov” or “.mil”). They include Congressional hearings, research reports from various agencies, statistics, reports from the U.S. President and the California governor, bills, regulations, Statutes, Codes, maps, budgets, annual reports, reports required by law, etc. You'll find plenty of information about business, agriculture, history, careers, census data, military history, health, genealogy, environment, energy, and lots more

How the READ Government Documents Project began --

After materials from the November 2004 election were taken down from a very large bulletin board in the Government Document section, I began searching for new display ideas. At the same time, I was also going through some old emails and found the Read (Docs!) campaign from the University of Minnesota. Can we do this at Chico? It looks like fun!

Most of us are familiar with the ALA Celebrity READ posters in which movie stars pose with their favorite book promoting libraries, literacy and reading.

In December 2004, I began asking Meriam Library staff (and friends of Meriam Library) to pick a government document and find a location for a photo shoot. Most of the photos were taken in Meriam Library, however, some folks had other ideas.

Most of the photos were taken by me .

I'd like to thank the staff of the University of Minnesota, Government Publications Library for the original idea and their inspiring photos. Take a look at MLA/GODORT Read (Docs!) -- they're great.

Thanks, also to the staff, students and friends of Meriam Library who participated in the READ Government Documents project -- their enthusiasm and creativity was a joy to work with.

A big thanks to Kathy Glanville (Meriam Library's Webmaster) for her patience and expertise in helping me get this project out on the web.

This project is ongoing -- I am currently looking for photos to add to the list. Check back later for new pic's

Please email me your comments or suggestions.
