Course Description:
This course is the major opportunity to gain experience in working with
teachers. It is in this set of field experiences where students will refine
their skills learned in the previous courses, and demonstrate that they
are able to plan and teach cooperatively with teachers in all curricular
areas using appropriate informational resources and educational strategies,
to practice, demonstrate and incorporate important administrative leadership
skills. A primary goal is to make the most effective use of opportunities
to work alongside, practice and apply the knowledge and skills obtained
in the various LMT Services Credential program, under the mentorship of
a successful, credentialed LMT. Placements will assure that candidates
will work with all grade levels.
It is the responsibility of the student to locate and arrange with the
site LMT for the field work placement opportunity. Each of the placements
must be approved in advance by the LMT Services Credential Program Coordinator.
Supervised field experience is required in school library media centers
at both the elementary and secondary school levels. The experiences include
meetings with the LMT Services Credential Program Coordinator and school
site LMT Supervisors for focused discussion and progress evaluation.
Course Objectives:
· Apply previously learned theory to school library media centers,
elementary and secondary.
· Establish a mentor-protégé relationship with
a practicing school library media specialist.
· Clarify the role of the school library media center in the
educational program.
· Experience the three roles of the library media specialist:
information specialist, teacher and consultant.
· Extend understanding of the administrative and operational
tasks involved in managing a library media center.

Requirements:
· Spend, observe, work a minimum of 40 hours in each type of
school library site (e.g., elementary, middle/jhs, high school) for a total
of 120 hours field experience.
· Attend and participate in field experience meetings with your
LMT Supervisors and the LMT Program Coordinator
· Maintain a journal and a portfolio of the field experiences
· Complete the formal evaluation
of your school site field work experiences
Course Evaluation Criteria:
Journal Requirement:
A time log, indicating date, number of hours and activities for each
site will be maintained and kept in the portfolio. Entries for each visit
with the following fields of information:
· Date
· Description of activities:
· Reflection: (observations, questions, opinions, etc.)
· Report of interview at one site
· In addition, each journal should end with a summary statement
of reflection on each school site experience.

Contents Checklist of Competencies to organize your portfolio. The
checklists will assist in the review and progress assessment process. During
EDCI 655: Supervised Experience in School Library Media Centers, this list
will be reviewed by the Program Coordinator and Supervising Library Media
Teachers at the school sites.
As you progress through the program please use the Brief
Checklist of Competencies and Standards to keep track of the competencies
met in courses that you take at CSU, Chico. You should indicate which competency
standards have been met during various courses.

LMT Site Supervisor Evaluation:
Each school site
supervisor will complete a
written formal evaluation of your performance in the school site experience;
the LMT Services Credential Program Coordinator will meet and confer with
each school site supervisor during a visit to the site.
Student Evaluation:
Each student
is expected to complete an
evaluation of each school site experience. These evaluations
will be shared with the school site supervisor; information will be helpful
feedback to the supervisors, and will provide insight into future placement
of students.
Some Major Areas of Emphasis:
The following descriptions of major areas of emphasis are taken
from the CSU, Chico LMT Services Credential Program document which outlines
how the required standards and competencies of the California Commission
on Teacher Credentialing are accomplished by our students. EDCI 655
Supervised Experience in School Library Media Centers provides the
following opportunities to:
· Apply instructional strategies which are appropriate
for each grade level through numerous observations, interviews, and field
experiences at all grade levels in all of the core courses and the courses,
and EDCI 655 (Supervised Experience in School Library Media Centers).
· Plan and implement instructional activities, including a staff
development activity, which reflects and demonstrates the skills learned
in the prior courses described above. Documentation of these activities
will be included in a portfolio.
· Develop short and long-range plans with teachers, administrators,
and community to meet the goals, of a comprehensive school library media
program, in such a manner as to be integral to the school's educational
process.
· Develop a budget for facilities, personnel, resources and technology
that reflects the needs, goals and objectives of the school library media
program.
· Define personnel needs, write job descriptions, identify procedures
for securing qualified people, develop personnel competencies and evaluate
staff performance.
· Assess existing and emerging technologies and apply them when
appropriate to provide for the efficient management, administration and
implementation of an effective school library media program. Establish
procedures for evaluating the extent to which program goals and objectives
have been achieved.
· Develop a clear understanding of information on the important
role of the school library media program and publicize services and resources
of the program effectively.
· Develop plans to promote the role of the school library media
program to the school community for the purpose of increasing use, ensuring
adequate financial support, and improving visibility and status of the
program.
· Obtain current information, guidelines, official policy documents,
standards, practices, opportunities for observations of planning sessions
with successful LMT practitioners, such that they will be knowledgeable
and conversant in the following areas and skills:
· Allocate budgeted funds based on cooperative planning with
an advisory committee which has considered needs, objectives, formulas
and state and national standards.
· Describe the characteristics of adequate facilities for the
school library media program and arrange existing facilities to the best
advantage, based on needs and objectives.
· Develop procedures for training and evaluating all library
personnel including student assistants and volunteers.
· Provide policies and procedures that assure efficient and effective
acquisition, cataloging, processing, circulation, storage, maintenance
and retrieval of resources and equipment.
· Plan the organization and direction of the school library media
center program by establishing a working structure within which individual
library staff members function as a team to carry out assigned responsibilities
designed to meet overall goals and objectives.
· Practice the various communications processes involved in the
development of budgets, determining a public relations and communications
program related to library program activities, apply appropriate techniques
of public relations, communication and group dynamics; and work as an effective
team member.
· Collaborate with teachers for instructional development, and
a library advisory committee; listen and respond to the needs of the students,
staff, and administration
· Establish rapport and foster mutual respect with the school
community to create a positive attitude among users of the services; use
appropriate and effective oral, written and media based communication techniques
for a variety of audiences;
· Identify individual differences and be sensitive to the cultural
heritage, community values and aspirations of diverse users; practice how
to select appropriate information sources that will meet the wide range
of diverse abilities, interests, and clusters of users; and to model positive
attitudes which are accepting and appreciative of diversity.
· Understand the breadth of literature for children and young
adults, and also will demonstrate skills which promote interest in reading,
viewing, listening, and critical thinking.
· Provide for a well-developed and current collection of resources
in areas of literature and information in a variety of print, non-print,
and electronic media, which promote interest in reading, viewing, listening,
and critical thinking; select, evaluate and recommend quality literature
and other related resources for various ages and needs.
· Work with teachers and parents to motivate and promote independent
reading, listening, and viewing among students as lifelong learners; work
with teachers to provide for the integration of literature with all curricular
areas.
· Collaborate with teachers to improve student skills related
to the promotion of literature and to improve literacy.
