Relationship to Institutional Objectives During the 1993-94 academic year, a university-wide task force on the Future of CSU, Chico met regularly to attempt to define the university mission. Based on their report, the university developed a Vision Statement that contained the following action plan: "To develop processes relating to instruction that are as rigorous as those we have applied to research. To bring teaching from the domain of the individual faculty member into collegial interaction and discussion. To shift from a focus on teaching, as a subjective, faculty-centered activity to learning as a shared outcome to be measured." In his letter of commitment endorsing the first FIPSE grant, the President of CSU, Chico wrote: "The first priority of CSU, Chico is superior teaching. CSU, Chico intends to be the leader in building a model business curriculum. It can transfer its improved teaching materials and methods to other institutions within the state system and outside the system." In fall 1995, the President issued his "Strategic Plan for the Future." The first priority of the strategic plan is "to create and enhance innovative, high quality, and student-centered learning environments. CSU, Chico, above all else, is a center for active and ongoing learning for students as well as faculty and staff. We actively create and nurture innovative and stimulating learning and working environments. At the core of these activities is our historic commitment to excellence in teaching and learning."
