Drew Dirks, Plant Science

Drew Dirks, Plant ScienceHe works hard and has a good time doing it. The 21-year-old plant and soil science major Drew Dirks likes to work so much that he even calls it one of his hobbies. Dirks also likes to hunt, fish and water-ski and do things that let him be in the great outdoors, so working on his family’s farming operation in Maxwell certainly fits his criteria for a good time. Prof. Lee Altier refers to Dirks as a good student who works well with others, which is one of the reasons he is this semester’s PSSC star student.

"In a small farming community, you just see one side of an issue and being here opened my eyes to different ways of doing things" says Dirks of his experience so far at Chico State. Dirks has done well in college, he has been on the Dean’s list several times and was recently asked to join Phi Kappa Phi and Golden Key International Honor Society because of his high GPA. Dirks also was recently awarded the 2004 California Agricultural Irrigation Association Scholarship.

Dirks says "once I graduate I’d like to get my PCA license, continue working with my family’s operation as well as get my own operation." He hopes to settle down in either Glenn or Colusa county and may soon start to grow sunflowers.
