Ten CSU, Chico students received $7,000 in Organic Dairy Production Awards at the Western Organic Dairy Producers Alliance (WODPA) Conference in Reno, Nevada on Nov. 14, 2017. This award is sponsored by organic dairy producers who seek to encourage the next generation of industry leaders in organic dairy production. Elmer Bustillos, Victor Medina, Nicholas Temple and Sierra Todd received $1,000 awards. Hunter Allen, Ciara Babcock, Sierra Blackford, Kate Carlson, Rylee McCown and Jaqueline Wagner each earned $500 awards.

The Chico Organic Dairy Management team attends the WODPA conference annually, attending seminars, assisting in the business meeting as stewards and note-takers, collecting survey data and running media during presentations. The purpose of the WODPA conference is to help organic dairy farmers stay informed about the future of the organic dairy business and its projections for the future. The conference also offers a trade show exhibiting large industry names in the organic dairy business as well as exposure to new upcoming technologies.

Medina said the Dairy Management Team’s role at the conference was to get the opportunity to connect with producers and gain a better understanding of what is happening in the industry that they take part in every day working at the Chico State Organic Dairy unit.

“For me, the most beneficial part of the experience was to be able to connect with producers and large companies at the trade show where I could learn more about internship and employment opportunities upon graduation,” Medina said.
