Canal Operations Workshop

The Cal Poly Irrigation Training and Research Center (ITRC) and CSU Chico Agricultural Teaching and Research Center (ATRC) have arranged a one day irrigation district workshop for Canal Operations. The Canal Operations course will be presented by Dr. Stuart Styles on behalf of the Mid-Pacific Region, US Bureau of Reclamation technical support agreement.

Canal Operations Workshop

  • Principles of flow measurement for open and closed systems
  • Common measurement devices - Weirs, flumes, meter gates (canal gates)
  • How to take accurate readings
  • Corrections for common problems
  • Intro to electronic flow meters
  • Field exercises
  • The service concept, including farmer constraints and needs
  • Purposes of different check structures
  • Water level vs. flow rate control
  • How to get more water through various devices
  • Interaction between canals and turnouts
  • Introduction to SCADA

*Books and lunch will be provided for a cost of $30.00 for each day
