CSU, Chico College of Agriculture Students Attend California Seed Association Tour

On Thursday, April 11, four California State University, Chico agriculture students attended the California Seed Association's Flower Seed Tour in Salinas, Calif. Approximately 50 students from CSU, Chico, CSU, Fresno, UC Davis, Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo attended the tour to learn about the flower industry. CSU, Chico students who attended included Laura White, Enrique Pinon, Derek Ellen and Thomas McWhorter.

“Because the seed industry is so dynamic and integrated with nearly all areas of agriculture, this is a fantastic opportunity for students who want to learn about this industry,” said plant science professor Betsy Boyd.

The tour was hosted by five companies with emphases in seeds, flowers, transplant and nursery operations. Students who attended the tour learned about different varieties of flowers, testing, experimentation and professionals in the flower seed industry.

Freshman agricultural business major Enrique Pinon recommends that every student should attend in the future. “Industry leaders love to see students interested in the seed industry,” he said. “They are always looking for new faces to hire. This was a great opportunity to see what the seed industry has to offer.”
