Alpha Zeta Welcomes New Members

California State University, Chico's agricultural honor society is welcoming a new class of high-achieving students. On Feb. 11 Alpha Zeta held an informational meeting for College of Agriculture students who had been invited to join based on grade point average (GPA) requirements. The Alpha Zeta organization consists of men and women who share a common educational and career goal focused around agriculture. Founded in 1897, Alpha Zeta is known as the oldest fraternal society in agriculture. The Chico State chapter currently has 15 active members.

“The great thing about Alpha Zeta is it isn’t directed toward one discipline; it encompasses all of agriculture,” said Casey Dykier, Alpha Zeta chancellor and senior agriculture major. “The one thing members have in common is a dedication to a career in agriculture and a devotion to their academics.”

To be invited to join Alpha Zeta, students must meet the minimum GPA requirement of a 3.0.  Each semester, students who have met the requirement are invited to an informational meeting about Alpha Zeta. About 20 students attended the informational meeting on Feb. 11. This is the third semester the group has decided to also hold a rush week.

“We decided to try it mostly to have fun with initiates and encourage them to socialize with other initiates and current members before joining,” Dykier said. “We want people to realize that although AZ is an honors fraternity, and very different than a Greek fraternity, it is a lot of fun!”

The rush week consisted of three events including hide-and-seek at the University Farm, dodgeball in the farm pavilion, and making tie-dye shirts. Initiates were required to attend one of the three to join. In addition, each semester the rush group is required to contribute four hours to community service before they can join. In the past they have contributed to projects such as canned food drives, Habitat for Humanity and Handi-Riders of Northern California.
