Chico State Students Train High School Leaders Around the Campfire

California State University, Chico students have packed their bags and headed up to the mountains to facilitate teambuilding workshops for high school students active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA). Over the years Dr. Brad Dodson has recruited the help of mostly Agriculture Education majors to coordinate workshops and facilitate for Camp Sylvester and Tehama.

This year Camp Sylvester fell on Sept. 11-12 and served students within the Stanislaus and Tri-rivers FFA sections. With 160 chapter officers and members present, 16 Chico State students volunteered approximately six hours of teambuilding workshops to the leadership conference. Throughout the conference students attended leadership workshops, a keynote speaker and recreational activities, including a dance.

The following week, Dodson and a team of volunteers headed for Camp Tehama Sept. 18-20. With over 50 chapters and roughly 350 FFA members present, Chico State students facilitated workshops for the Superior Region Chapter Officer Leadership Conferences (COLC). The facilities hosted two overlapping COLC's due to the sheer size of the Superior region. Chico State students also aided Levy Randolph, California's National FFA Officer Candidate, with mock interviews in preparation for the National FFA interview process.

Both camps are great opportunities for Ag Education majors to interact with high school students and gain practical experience with developing lesson plans and facilitating workshops.
