CSU, Chico Hosts Cattle Judging Contest

On Nov. 20, 2016, CSU, Chico and Ward Cattle Company cohosted their first all-cattle judging contest at the University Farm. Chico State’s Claire Gladman won first high individual, and Emily Dulany achieved second high individual in the contest.

Just over 100 collegiate and high school contestants participated in the contest, judging 12 classes of cattle and giving four sets of oral reasons justifying their placings.

“The Cattle Contest Vol. 1provided a challenging yet rewarding experience to evaluate high-quality cattle. I think it definitely assisted in our team’s preparation in upcoming contests this winter and spring,” Dulany said.

Team members credit the Ward family, contest officials, local cattle breeders and their coach, Clay Carlson, for their experience.

“Without these generous people, the contest would not have been possible,” Dulany said.

Carlson said the team plans to offer the cattle contest again next year.
