FFA Field Day Sets Bar High

The California State University, Chico College of Agriculture and the Butte College Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources hosted their annual FFA Field Day on March 9, 2013, at the CSU, Chico University Farm; Butte College campus; and CSU, Chico main campus.

The field day gave nearly 1,600 high school students from across California and into Oregon an opportunity to demonstrate their communication skills, technical competence and leadership skills through various competitions. A total of 126 FFA teams competed in 22 different contests, including livestock judging, agriculture mechanics, agriculture sales, agriculture pest control and many more.

Many people at the event spoke of its success. Ann Sobrato High School teacher and agriculture department head Myndi Krafft spoke highly of the event: “The Chico State FFA Field day was great! The staff and students were highly organized and effective at running all of the contests. I was very impressed with the overall professionalism of the entire event.”

“What a great job by our leadership team, said CSU, Chico College of Agriculture Associate Dean Dave Daley. I was so impressed by our students’ professionalism, attitude, attention to detail and the genuine enthusiasm they displayed for what they were doing.”

At the end of the day, the competitors filed into the University Farm Pavilion to await the announcement of the results. Many FFA chapters will go on to state finals in Fresno on April 18 and at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo on May 4 based on their success.

Awards and the overall event were made possible through sponsors such as Alltech, Diamond Foods, Durham Pump Inc., Keyawa Orchards, Law Offices of Alan M. Laskin, Matson and Isom, Northern California Farm Credit, James Paiva, Rice Researchers Inc., Stukey Nursery, Superior Ag, Rain for Rent, Riverwest Processing, and Wells Fargo.
