2014 CSU, Chico, Butte College Field Day Has Record Attendance

The California State University, Chico College of Agriculture and the Butte College Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources hosted their annual FFA Field Day on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at the CSU, Chico University Farm, Butte College campus and CSU, Chico main campus.

The field day gave over 1,900 high school students from across California and into Oregon an opportunity to demonstrate their communication skills, technical competence and leadership abilities through various competitions. More than 2,400 students were registered to compete in the 22 different contests, resulting in a 79 percent show rate and a 14 percent overall increase from 2013. Contests students competed in included livestock judging, agriculture mechanics, agriculture sales, agriculture pest control and many more.

College of Agriculture Associate Dean Dave Daley said that this was the best field day yet. “I have been around these contests for nearly 40 years as a participant, worker, planner, advisor, coordinator, and this was the best job I have ever seen,” said Daley. “There were so many Chico students working along with faculty and staff and so many moving parts, and I never heard of one major issue or complaint. It ran like clockwork.”

The CSU, Chico and Butte College FFA Field Day was facilitated by college staff and faculty, volunteers and students. CSU, Chico student and 2014 field day co-chair Ashley Pipkin was excited to see the event come together. “This year we had a leadership team of 27 students that have been meeting all semester to pull this thing off,” said Pipkin. “Aside from our team, hundreds of students, staff, and volunteers dedicated their time and energy to hosting these contests for FFA students every year. Contests like these help mold high school students into hardworking, dedicated, and responsible individuals. That alone makes all of our hard work worth it each year.”
