Ag Students Attend Regional Competition

The Western Collegiate Food Marketing Competition was held at California State University, Fresno, March 11-12. CSU, Chico had two teams enter the competition, and the international food marketing team took second place.

The international team devised a plan for the fictional company “Lucky Treasure Nuts,” targeting consumers in Hong Kong. Team members included Sara Spafford, Kirby Swickard, and Janice Bridwell.

The domestic marketing team created a marketing plan for the fictional product Bidwell Smart Bites, a healthy fruit snack that would provide the recommended amount of daily vitamins. It was targeted to those wanting to eat healthy snacks. The team consisted of team captain Elle Karno-Palic, Kendra Anderson, and Katie Lewis.

This year’s competition had a new individual division called Pecha Kucha. Individuals had to create a marketing plan for a product and present 20 slides in 6.6 seconds. The slides forwarded automatically while the competitor talked through them. Spafford and Karno-Palic both entered the Pecha Kucha competition.

Spafford developed “Perfect Portion…meal containers that make eating easy!” to help teach kids how to eat in the correct proportions. Karno-Palic developed “Fresh to go Snacks,” which were products that enabled consumers to get the recommended five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables.

The food marketing competition gives students a competitive opportunity to create a marketing plan and present it to judges. It gives them experience in marketing presentations and how to market effectively.
