Food Marketing Team to Compete in Puerto Rico

On Oct. 11, four agricultural business students, Jessica Neugebauer, Christie Hobby, Derek Eid and James Bennett are leaving for San Juan, Puerto Rico, to compete at the Distribution Research Society’s National Student Food Marketing Challenge. The students will be challenged to apply their knowledge of food distribution, economics, management, marketing and merchandising in a real world situation.

The contest is during the Distribution Research Society’s 13th annual meeting. This is the first time Chico State is competing in this competition. “Since this will be our first time participating in this competition, we do not have a clear picture about the competition, but we are excited to participate in such a unique opportunity,” Dr. Baohui Song said. “Hopefully, this trip will give us some experience and we can be even better prepared for next year.”

Each team will be given a live case study in which a company representative presents background information and the case “challenge” to the student teams the morning of the first day of the contest. Teams are expected to play the role of consultants competing for the account of the mystery company and are expected to present their plan to the company’s executive. The top three teams will split the $1,000 prize.
