College of Agriculture Economists take Quiz Bowl by Storm

This summer, the Chico State College of Agriculture was well represented at the Agricultural Applied Economic Association Annual Meeting July 29-August 1, 2017 in Chicago, Illinois. Coach and Professor Baohui Song accompanied Rayna Barden, Nicholas Barnett, Manuel Brazil, Austin Dowse, Alexander Neumann, and Angie Velasquez.

At the meeting, agriculture business major Austin Dowse was awarded second place in the Earl O. Heady Decision Sciences Spreadsheet Competition. This competition encompasses the creation of a spreadsheet and poster, in which Dowse analyzed the economic benefits of using differing chemicals in fruit processing at a local processing plant. He described the meeting as rewarding, both in his team’s triumph as well as an honor in having the ability to represent the Chico State College of Agriculture at the national level.

“After spending a full year studying and preparing,” Song said, “it’s fun to see their hard work pay off.”

Within the AAEA meeting, agricultural economists are put to the test in eight categories during a jeopardy style quiz bowl. These eight categories include agricultural business and finance, macroeconomics, microeconomics, management, marketing, quantitative, resources and policy, and a “potpourri” category, which is a combination of all other themes. While competing in the quiz bowl, students also were able to interact with peers from across the globe and tour the city of Chicago.
