Agriculture Economics Team Competes in National Quiz Bowl

On July 28, 2014, eight California State University, Chico students headed to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to test their knowledge of agricultural economics in a national quiz bowl. The Academic Bowl took place during an annual meeting of the Applied Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA).

Coached by Professor Baohui Song, agriculture students Karen Flickinger, Ryan Scagliotti, Cecilia Wilson, Mary Herigstad-Franz, Michael Phillips, Kim Tracy, Blake Shannon and Jacob Hanson each competed on three-person teams, and the team of Flickinger, Scagliotti and Wilson made it to the quarterfinal round. Placing in the top eight of 28 teams, it was the highest a CSU, Chico team has finished in the national competion.

In the Academic Bowl, two teams square off in a Jeopardy-style tournament of 15-minute rounds. Competitors are tested on their knowledge in categories such as agriculture business and finance, marketing, resources and policy, and management. The team with the most points at the end of 15 minutes wins the match.

“It was an honor to be able to represent Chico State at the national competition,” said Flickinger, a 2014 graduate in agricultural business. “It was a great experience to travel with my teammates and Dr. Song to Minneapolis, and then to make it to the quarterfinal round was very rewarding.”

Students who wish to compete in this competition must first take two semesters of ABUS 300, Agricultural Business Competition, a course that prepares competitors by giving them practice and experience in the rigors of the Academic Bowl.

“Agricultural economists attend the AAEA conference from all over the United States as well as Germany, Canada, China, and Japan, so it’s a great opportunity for our students to network with people from all over the world,” Song said. “Our students do well in this competition every year, and this year they did especially well. After spending a full year studying and preparing for the competition, it’s fun to see their hard work pay off.”
