California State University, Chico Hosts Successful Sheep and Meat Goat Educational Day

On Feb. 11, 2017, the University Farm Sheep Unit hosted its annual Sheep and Meat Goat Educational Day. The day started at 9 a.m., and more than 700 people attended.

New to this year’s event was an online auction, which saw more than 60 bidders from Colorado, Utah and California, in place of the traditional live auction. Workshops presented by students and alumni included information on animal selection, nutrition, health, fitting and grooming, and showmanship. At the end of the day, they served lamb tacos for lunch along with precooked lamb shoulder donated from Superior Farms in Dixon.

Advisor Celina Philips said her students continue to amaze and motivate her.

“Thirty students assisted with our event, and they were great ambassadors to the 700 attendees. The Sheep Unit crew of Ben Grismer, Jamie Conner, Ashley Utz and seven of our direct work animal science students worked extremely hard to clean up and prepare workshops for the morning,” Philips said.
