College of Ag Hosts Annual Sheep and Goat Day

The California State University, Chico College of Agriculture held its annual Sheep and Goat Day and Sale on Feb. 8 at the University Farm, located on Hegan Lane. About 950 people attended the event, which began at 7:30 a.m. and included a trade show, educational workshops and a live sale of project sheep and goats.

This year's project sheep cosigners included the CSU, Chico Sheep Unit, C&E Club Lambs, Three Sisters Sheep, Farinelli Club Lambs, Phoenix Farms, Lanzi Ranch, Spencer Farms, Silver Sage Club Lambs, Heart P Livestock and Ranchview Livestock. Goat cosigners included the CSU, Chico Goat Unit, Raimer Ranches, Blevins Boer Goats, IJ Boer Goats and JVO Boer Goats. Other vendors in attendance were Shaul's Manufacturing, Glamb Jams, Bar Ale Inc., Showmaster Feeds, Northern California Meat Goat Association and B. True Designs.

Topics for the educational workshops included nutrition, fitting and grooming, veterinary medicine, show animal economics, livestock judging classes, stockdog demonstrations, showmanship and selection. Breakfast and lunch were sold by Northern California Meat Goat Association youth members to support their awards and scholarship program.

Participants in the sheep and goat selection workshops determined the sale order by evaluating and placing the animals. The top eight sheep and top eight goats were sold first. The champion and reserve goat as well as the people's choice goat came from the CSU, Chico Goat Unit. The people's choice goat was selected from the top eight goats in a vote by participants. The champion goat sold for a record-setting price of $850. The rest of the goat sale averaged $425 per head, and the sheep sale averaged $418 per head.
