College of Ag Hosts Educational Swine Day

The California State University, Chico College of Agriculture hosted a Swine Education Day at the University Farm, located on Hegan Lane, on Feb 2. With more than 650 participants, Swine Day gives 4-H and FFA members the opportunity to expand their knowledge about raising market hogs for county fairs and other jackpot shows.

Throughout the day, College of Ag students conduct numerous workshops on topics such as showmanship, live swine evaluation, animal health, carcass evaluation and more. Attendees could also purchase project hogs from the CSU, Chico Swine Unit to raise and exhibit at fairs and other shows. The University Farm Swine Unit sold 20 hogs this year at an average price of $313 per head and the high price being $400.
