In Memoriam: Wayne Harder
It is with great sadness that we say good-bye to Wayne Harder, a founding board member of the Chico Chapter of the CSU, Chico Alumni Association. In Wayne's memory, the Chico Chapter is sponsoring the brand new Wayne Harder Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship value is $2,000 ($1,000 awarded each semester) and is awarded to a new or returning Chico State Student from the prefaced 959 or 960 zip codes (essentially from Redding to Marysville) who is the dependent of a Chico Chapter Alumni Association member. This scholarship requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 and is funded by the proceeds from the annual Chico Chapter Spring Tri-Tip Barbecue and private donations. Applicants must complete the CSU, Chico Scholarship Application on the Financial Aid Web site (by January 1, 2008), and must complete the Alumni Association Supplemental Scholarship Application (by February 1, 2008).
Wayne Harder passed away on November 25, 2007, and will be greatly missed. Wayne was committed to the alumni and students of Chico State, and to making the University better.
"Over 4 years ago, as the new Chico Chapter President, I was asked to put together a board of local interested alumni. Fortunately for me, Wayne Harder accepted my invitation. For the next 4 years, we worked together with other board members to give the Chico chapter a "jump start"...Wayne was instrumental in our succeeding in our many goals...I will miss him not only as a hard working board member but more importantly as a friend and wonderful individual. My most sincere thoughts go out to his family and close friends at this time of loss." Don Carlsen, Past President and Founding Member, Chico Chapter Board
"Like you, I am stunned and saddened by Wayne 's sudden death, but it is good to remind ourselves that in life Wayne did what he could to make our community and the university better places, and it is for that reason we want to honor his memory. His was a life well-lived. We should be guided by his example, emulate his generosity and kindness, and do good work in our community. I have known Wayne for many years, and I know that is what he would want." Matthews Jackson, President, Chico Chapter Board
"I remember Wayne on the basketball reception committee with me. His favorite job was serving wine the whole evening so he could talk to everyone. He figured he'd see more people that way. It was very cute. After most meetings, the Board would go out for a beverage and Wayne would always be there enjoying talking to everyone. It was nice that I got to spend time talking to him about the good times and sad times in his life." Kathy Hardin, Founding Chico Chapter Board Member
