Dear Chico State Alumni,
The California State University, Chico Alumni Association Board of Directors is in complete support of President Paul Zingg’s decision to suspend social Greek organizations on campus. We understand that fraternities and sororities were warned by the University that a number of serious incidents this year, including assaults, allegations of hazing and out-of-control parties, could not continue. We are aware that the Greek chapters will be given an opportunity for reinstatement by meeting a strict new set of guidelines presented to them next semester.
President Zingg has made it clear that the campus intends to take other significant steps to ensure student safety. Foremost is to change the culture of binge drinking that pervades too many students’ lives and exacts a horrible toll. Substance abuse exists in every community, but we have learned from experts that binge drinking exceeds national averages on our campus. We risk other young people’s lives if we don’t act now.
Our board is made up entirely of Chico State alumni who have a vested interest in the safety and success of current students, and are dedicated to serving the interests of the University. While we have first-hand knowledge of the University, we also bring an outside perspective on the University’s challenges that may be different from what is heard on campus. In this matter, we stand solidly with President Zingg and the campus community. We will do anything we can to keep students safe and eliminate the tragedies from binge drinking that keep occurring in our community.
