The Third Annual Chico Experience Week Kicks Off this October
The Chico Experience Week Oct 5 - 14
The 2012 Chico Experience Week kicks off on October 5, with the unveiling of the third print in the Jake Early series. Early (BA, Information and Communication Studies, ’94) is designing a series of five prints to celebrate The Chico Experience. Last year’s print, the “H,” proved to be extremely popular and gave collectors the clue that the next four pieces will be “I,” “C,” and “O.” In collaboration with Chico Paper Company he will donate a portion of the prints’ sales to the Chico State Alumni Association. The third print will be unveiled during the kick-off to this year’s Chico Experience Week festivities at Chico Paper Company on Friday, October 5, 5:00—7:00 p.m. Chico Paper Company is owned by alums Greg Strong (BA, Asian Studies, History, 1991) and Jana Donoho-Strong (BFA, Fine Arts, 1992).

Alumni events scheduled during this year’s Chico Experience Week include the Class of 1962 reunion and Golden Grad festivities, Recreation Department Alumni Reunion, and the Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner. Community events include the third annual Chico Velo Fallflower Ride, the Sierra Oro Trail Passport Weekend, and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Oktoberfest.

The Chico Experience Week is October 5-14, 2012. For a complete list of all activities search the chico experience week online.

Kendra’s Korner
Kendra WrightAs the weather is so drastically changing, especially here in Chico, so is the world around us. The summer months have a large impact on some of us, and for others, the daily routine seems to keep powering through, regardless of season. One thing that is constant though, is change. And another thing that is constant is my amazement of how differently people adapt to change. Some people that I know are true cheerleaders of change. Bring it ON! Others are willing to put their foot down and stand strong with what they are familiar and comfortable with.

Me? I’m somewhere in the middle. Although one thing I can’t keep up with is technology. I admire those who are in the tech world and can keep up with the ever-changing trends at the speed of light. Another thing I can’t seem to keep up with is communication styles. Stereotypically, the current college student needs information fast, direct, short and to the point. No fluff and if it’s not easy to access, no thank you. Me, on the other hand, I am hoping that we can meet in person, maybe have lunch and hug at the end of the conversation.

Where I’m going with this is change is inevitable. And although I don’t always understand it, my goal is to accept it. Both personally and professionally, change is all around me. And instead of trying to reach my target market in an archaic manner, I am intrigued and pleasantly surprised by the outcome I receive when I try to jump on their level.

I’m not suggesting that we change who we are. Furthermore, I’m not suggesting to change beliefs, values and morals. Maybe it’s just a matter of perspective and being open to our changing society and sometimes the response of, “well, that’s the way I’ve always done it” might not be the best answer anymore?

I am off to add another update to my iPhone……

Alumni Profile
Aaron Skaggs

Aaron Skaggs was born and raised in Chico and started his college career at Chico State in 2005 as a Construction Management major. After being bit by the political bug in 2006, Aaron joined the Student Democratic Club at Chico State and was elected president of the organization, a position he held for two years. Aaron changed his major to Political Science soon after joining the Student Democratic Club.

Aaron’s involvement in the Student Democratic Club led to many opportunities, including meeting then presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama, and volunteering in Las Vegas for Senator Obama for the week leading up to the Nevada Primary. Aaron also worked as a volunteer for the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver.

Aaron has served on Chico’s Bidwell Park and Playground Commission, and was a founding father and external vice president of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, Lambda Psi Chapter. Nearing the end of his college career, Aaron was selected to take part in the Sacramento Semester Internship Program where he worked for Assembly member Isadore Hall, III. After his Sacramento internship program ended, he was selected to represent Chico State as an intern in Washington, D.C., through the Panetta Institute Congressional Internship Program, where he worked for Congressman Fortney “Pete” Stark.

After graduating in 2010 with a political science degree, Aaron returned to Sacramento to work as a legislative aide in the State Capitol for Assembly member Isadore Hall, III, a position he currently holds.

Aaron is currently a board member of the Chico State Alumni Association and is president of the Chico Alumni Association Sacramento Chapter. In his capacity as chapter president, Aaron is actively seeking dedicated alumni in the Sacramento region to help organize networking events, mixers, and community service activities that will bring alumni together.

Construction Management Students Seeking 2013 Community Service Project
Students from the California State University, Chico College of Engineering, Computer Science and Construction Management and a board of community advisors invite community organizations to submit community service projects for their 2013 Winter Break Project.

Background
CSU, Chico students have established a winter break tradition of giving, spending months organizing and preparing for a week of service to the community during the last week of winter break in January. In 2006, 2007 and 2008, these projects were dedicated to the clearing of debris and the rebuilding of homes in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. During 2008’s pilgrimage to New Orleans, 117 students rebuilt 14 homes.
