Alumni Glen Ribbon Cutting Event

On Saturday, October 15, 2011 members of the Chico campus and community are celebrating the Alumni Glen Ribbon Cutting Event. The program will begin at noon, followed by a barbecue. We invite everyone to join us in recognizing all those who helped in the Alumni Glen renovation project and also celebrate the history of Alumni Glen. The renovation incorporates a new concrete pad, seating walls, and the infrastructure for tent placement to create a useable space for Chico State students, alumni, and the campus community. Alumni Glen is also the new home for the Chico State flame, previously located on First Street and Salem. This event is free and open to the public.

Kendra’s Korner

Welcome to Kendra’s Korner. My name is Kendra Kittoe and I am a Career Advisor at the Chico State Career Center. In such a challenging economy, there are so many questions that arise about the working world. How do I get a job? How do I get a new job? Are there any jobs out there for me? Sound familiar?

The great part about these questions is the Chico State Career Center has solutions. Each month we will address questions and provide trends, ideas and cutting-edge approaches for navigating a challenging job market. Please send in your questions to with a subject line of Kendra's Korner and in each issue I will answer a different question related to careers and the job market.

Many times, I am asked...

I have applied to hundreds of jobs online and haven't received a single response. What do I do now?

First and foremost, if you've literally applied to hundreds of jobs you're qualified for, and have not yet received a single offer for an interview, then it is likely your resume is not up to par in terms of content, format or both. We have many resources for resume development on the Career Center website:

Once your resume is in tip-top shape, remember that applying to online job postings is just one aspect of a job search. Your job hunt should be multi-faceted. In addition to applying online, you should be:
  • Setting up informational interviews with people in your field of interest.
  • Networking to expand your list of contacts (network with anyone and everyone not only people you suspect would have leads... this includes your neighbors, friends of friends and distant relatives).
  • Using professional networking websites like LinkedIn to establish additional contacts and develop job leads.
  • Following up on jobs you have applied to (either via email, phone and/or in person), if you have contact information.
  • Visiting businesses you know or suspect may be hiring and delivering a resume in person, or even visiting those businesses you know nothing about... you just never know what you'll uncover.
  • Checking with the Chamber of Commerce's in the cities where you would like to work and getting a list of largest companies and/or fastest growing companies to contact; these are the organizations that are often hiring.
  • “Googling” to find websites of companies in your field, and then sending those companies resumes even if there aren't any jobs listed on the website. Most jobs are not advertised!
Happy Hunting,
Kendra Kittoe

Alumni Update
Alumni Spotlight – Mike Bird (photo: left) and Mitch Riggin (photo: right)
Mitch Riggin (class of 1991) and Mike Bird (class of 1995) are both television directors for Major League Baseball teams, Riggin for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Bird for the Oakland A's. The two have known each other for years, but they never faced off against each other as their respective teams played. This changed this summer as the Diamondbacks faced the A's July 1 – 3.

"If you watched any of those games," says Riggin, "either in the Bay Area or the Phoenix area, or anywhere in the world on the Internet, Chico State alumni were in charge of what you were watching." The A's took two out of three games that weekend, but the Diamondbacks are on their way to post-season play. Congratulations to both Mitch and Mike!
