Budget Woes
Parents Can Make a Difference!

Students in the California State University system are being hit with a double whammy in spring 2012; fees are most likely increasing and state budget cuts will impact the level of service offered by each of the CSU campuses. There are steps that you as a parent can take to help make a difference:

1. Join the Action Network (http://capwiz.com/calstate/home/) and the CSU Legislative Action Center will send you regular updates on issues related to the CSU system and will provide you with tips for speaking out in support of higher education for the Sate of California.

2. Register to vote to make your voice heard.

3. Send e-mails and make phone calls to your elected officials letting them know how budget cuts will devastate the system and affect higher education for all of our State’s citizens.

The CSU, Chico scholarship application for the 2012-2013 academic year is available until December 15, 2011. Applications must be received by December 15, 2011 midnight, Pacific Standard Time.

Go to http://www.csuchico.edu/fa/scholarships/online_schol_app.shtml to apply. The CSU, Chico scholarship application is composed of two parts:

1. The online application that is submitted by the student, and

2. The online letter of recommendation that is submitted directly by the faculty member, advisor, teacher, or counselor after the student has contacted them and requested it.

Please note: both online forms must be submitted by the deadline in order for the student's scholarship application to be considered complete.
Applicants must be enrolled, or eligible for enrollment, at Chico State in order to be eligible for Chico State scholarships. All scholarships require recipients to be enrolled full-time (12 units for undergrad and credential students; 8 units for grad students). All scholarships require a minimum GPA of 2.00, and many require a GPA of 3.00 or higher. Some scholarships also require the completion of a supplemental application.

If you have additional questions, please feel free to call the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office at 530-898-6451, or e-mail the scholarship office directly at scholarships@csuchico.edu.

Family Weekend
The Chico Experience Week 2011
 COMM School of Communication
On Saturday, October 8, 2011, almost 900 people participated in the Annual Family Weekend Barbecue host this year by Kinder’s. The weather, as is normal for most of October in Chico, was absolutely beautiful. During lunch, the crowd was addressed by Parent Advisory Council President Bob Combs, Associated Students President London Long, and University President Paul Zingg.

Prior to the barbecue, visitors to campus were invited to participate in a free yoga session in Alumni Glen, take a tour of the campus arboretum, and participate in a sustainability tour of campus. Following lunch, campus activities included a meeting for parents of students living in the residence halls and a meeting of the Chico State Parent Advisory Council.

Community events taking place that day included the Annual Sierra Oro Farm Trail Passport Weekend, and the Parade of Lights through Downtown Chico. As the kick-off weekend for Chico Experience Week, Family Weekend was very successful. Chico State students and their families were able to enjoy a beautiful and festive weekend in Chico!
