Happy Holidays from the Chico State Alumni Association

Happy HolidaysThe Office of Alumni and Parent Relations and the Chico State Alumni Association wish Wildcats everywhere a very happy holiday season!

As 2014 winds down, we are moved to reflect on our accomplishments this year. With the support of alumni members and volunteers, we have had a phenomenal year of growth.

We steadily grew our alumni networks and chapters, resulting in the addition of the Chico Young Alumni Network and San Diego Alumni Network. With the help of chapter leadership across the state, over 500 alumni had the opportunity to reconnect with one another at alumni events in 2014. Furthermore, the Chico Alumni Chapter continues to grow its endowment, now funding both the Wayne Harder Memorial Scholarship and the Graham Whitney Scholarship.

We look forward to many exciting alumni events in 2015!

Women's Soccer

Tis the season for postseason soccer awards and the Chico State women's team wrapped up a number of honors thanks to the admirable efforts in the classroom and under the tall trees that line the east side of University Soccer Stadium.

Head Coach Kim Sutton's squad earned the 2013-14 National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Women's Team Academic Award by posting a GPA of 3.0 or higher, while four individuals were among 40 named All-West Region. Read more.

Student Learning at Week-long Conference
Facebook Twitter Addthis
Every year, the Department of Recreation, Hospitality, and Parks Management sends students to the annual AutoDesk University conference to learn hands-on how to run meetings and conferences
Rec StudentsThis year, 20 Recreation Department students made their way to Las Vegas, NV the Saturday after Thanksgiving to get first-hand experience running a major conference. More than 9,000 people from all over the world headed to this year's conference. Students worked registration, materials distribution, room scanning and hosting, and directions.

On average, the students work 50-60 hours at the conference. In addition to learning how the conference functions, students also witness some of the latest innovations in computer-aided design software and applications. Until the end of the year, you too can view the keynote and innovation presentations.

Students participating in this conference receive credit in a graded course, and some invaluable life experience. For many, this conference is a true indicator of whether or not they want to make this field their career. All of them, though, did a great job representing Chico State.
Student Spotlight - Sendi Barrett

Sendi Barrett
Sendi Barrett graduated from Chico State this fall with her B.S. in Recreation Administration, with a resort and lodging management option. Sendi completed her internship requirement with the Chico State Office of Alumni and Parent Relations. She seamlessly managed events such as the Family Weekend BBQ and the Honoring Our Veterans Event. Sendi coordinated the largest Family Weekend BBQ of Chico State history, welcoming over 1,600 parents and students to Yolo Lawn.  Needless to say, the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations was sad to see her go!

Sendi was not on the job search for long, as she was offered her first choice as the Recreation Center Manager for the Single Marines Program at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

Farshad Azad, MPA Public Administration '90

Farshad Azad graduated from Chico State in 1990 with a MPA in Public Administration. Azad is no stranger to the campus and Chico community. He is well known as the owner of Azads Martial Arts Family Center. A sampling of Azad's service to Chico State includes sitting on the University Advisory Board as the Chairman, being the Faculty Adviser to the Persian Student Club, being on the President's Diversity Council, and serving on the Chico State International Students' Integration Committee Task Force.

Azad also established the Campus and Community Coalition (CCC), which bridges the gap between the community and campus.  CCC facilitates contact between the Greek organizations and the community to foster communication, teamwork, conversation, genuine support system, and true partnership to benefit both sides. Not only does Azad serve Chico State, but he also supports the community the community in many ways. He coordinates the Annual Parade of Lights and organizes the Annual Thanksgiving Basket Brigade. He instills service into all of his students at Azad's Martial Arts by encouraging their participation in the Basket Brigade. They feed approximately 200 families each year!

The Chico State Alumni Association is very pleased to announce that they have selected Farshad Azad as the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Service Award. He will be honored and awarded at the Distinguished Alumni Dinner on April 10, 2015.
