Chico Chapter Spring Tri-tip Barbecue

The Chico Chico Chapter Tri-Tip BBQChapter chose to mix things up this year; the annual tri-tip barbecue was held out at the University Farm Pavilion. Turned out the farm provides a wonderful venue for a barbecue event. There were both walking and hayride tours of the farm available for all who were interested. Dead Man's Hand provided musical entertainment, and Chico State's AS Catering provided great food. This is an annual event, so make sure to add it to you calendar for next year!

Chico State Alum Makes the World Cup Roster

Chris Wondowlowski
By Luke Reid

Fifteen years ago, Chico State Men's soccer coach Mike O'Malley saw something in an underappreciated young soccer player with an unrelenting motor and a penchant for poaching goals. Those same traits have caught the eye of U.S. Men's National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann. Chris Wondolowski, who led Chico State to the 2003 NCAA Division II Championship title match, was named to Klinsmann's final 23-man U.S. Men's 2014 FIFA World Cup roster in a historic announcement for Chico State and NCAA Division II soccer.

Chico State Alum Mark Ulriksen Goes to the Dogs

"There is nothing happier than a happy dog," reads one of the observations in Dogs Rule, Nonchalantly, a new book by artist/illustrator Mark Ulriksen, '80, Visual Communication. The book combines hand-written observations and intricate paintings of dogs from over 20 years of his career as a major contributor to The New Yorker magazine, Newsweek, Time, and other publications.

"Dogs have always been a part of my life," according to Ulriksen. "Starting with my first dog Bernie, who used to get so excited at mealtime that he would pee in his food." His other dogs were less problematic but all were special to him including Ted, Maggie, Sable, Doog, Buck, Cleo, Tiger, and Saber II (his dad really liked that name) and his current dog Henry, a chocolate Lab who is featured on the cover of his new book.

Ulriksen is creating the book, together with his wife and fellow alum Leslie Flores, '81, Visual Communication, and his old college roommate, producer/book packager Tom Walker, '80, Visual Communication, who has had a long career in collaborating on such best-selling illustrated books as A Day in the Life of America, The Who's Tommy the Musical, and the last two official U.S. Presidential Inaugural Books.

Through May 31, Dogs Rule, Nonchalantly will be featured on Kickstarter, a crowdsource funding platform. "The book will be published in the all of this year by Goff Books," says Walker, "but book publishing is a tough business these days, and we felt the Kickstarter platform would allow us to raise awareness for the project, as well as raise money for a proper PR and marketing campaign for the book's launch."

You can check out the project on Kickstarter at www.DogsRuleProject.com/ks to contribute and learn more.
