Chico Community Anticipates Book in Common Kickoff Event
The community kickoff for the 2016–2017 Book in Common, My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem, will take place on Thursday, September 29 from 6–7 p.m. in front of the Chico Municipal Building, 411 Main Street. My Life on the Road is a perfect example of the personal being political, as Steinem chronicles moments in her family and personal life that inspired activism in the political arena. Through humorous and moving anecdotes, the book proves the point that by working together, regular people can drive change. Find out more about the Book in Common.
Nation's First Thin-Film Solar Charging Station Opens
CSU, Chico welcomes students to the start of a new semester with a unique solar-powered charging station for portable and mobile electronics at the BMU terrace. The student-led project is the culmination of a year of design, review and planning. The station is a stand-alone, off-grid electrical system powered by a 600-watt solar photovoltaic array of thin-film panels and a 12-volt, 780-amp battery bank. The project is the first solar-powered charging station in the nation to utilize thin-film photovoltaic panels. Read more about this project.
Student Spotlight: Kym Crosby
Former Chico State track star Kym Crosby competed in the 100-meter and 400-meter races in the Paralympic Games in Rio earlier this month. She won a bronze medal in the 100-meter, finishing the dash in 12.64 seconds. Crosby was born with albinism, leaving her without pigment in her skin, hair, or eyes, which causes twice as much light to enter her eyes as someone with pigment. Although she is legally blind, her motto is "limited sight, limitless dreams." Read more about Crosby's story here and here.
