Sick tree in Trinity Commons area

One of the large specimen trees in the Trinity Commons area flanking Trinity Hall is sick.  FMS had a large infected limb removed in the Fall in an effort to save the tree. The tree is a Port Orford Cedar, and has been on a ‘watch-list’ for the last several years. The disease within the tree has, unfortunately, spread throughout 75% of the canopy. A licensed arborist has certified that the Cedar has over 20% of its roots in decay due to Botryosphaeria Canker (this report may be reviewed by staff, faculty or students in the FMS offices). The disease poses a future safety concern, as the continued decay of the roots may cause the tree to become un-balanced and fall. FMS has consulted with professional Arborists, along with Dr. Wes Dempsey of the Campus Arboretum Committee regarding the future of the tree.  It has been determined that the tree will be removed this summer.

We are saddened to see such a large specimen go, but in the interest of safety and the health of surrounding trees it is necessary. Please do not hesitate to contact Mike Alonzo at 898-3909
