OSHA's New Mandatory Chemical Labeling Requirements Workshop
Recently, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) passed sweeping changes to the Hazard Communication Standard which are to be phased in over the next few years. The Hazard Communication Standard (Hazcom) covers the labeling of chemical containers and the Material Safety Data Sheets that accompany those containers. The updated regulations, often referred to as the Globally Harmonized System or GHS, will standardize chemical labeling and MSDSs.
To give departments as much time as possible to implement a compliance plan that works best for them, EHS will be hosting a workshop on May 30th, 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., in Ayres 120 where the requirements of the regulations, the Campus implementation plan, and some current labeling software and hardware options will be presented. We hope that you encourage faculty and staff in your areas, who manage or store chemicals, to attend the workshop. While the deadlines appear to be years away, each department will face their own compliance challenges; and the more time you have to establish a compliance timeline the better off everyone will be in the end.
