April 8 film: "God Loves Uganda"
On Tuesday, April 8 the University Film Series presents:
A CHICO PREMIERE. "God Loves Uganda" (USA, 2013). 83 mins. Directed by Roger Ross Williams. Introduced by Kate McCarthy (Comparative Religion). Followed by a Q&A discussion with guest panelists Jim Peck (New Vision United Church of Christ), David Eaton (Anthropology) and Vanessa Sundin (Stonewall Alliance).
The feature-length documentary, "God Loves Uganda," explores the role of American religious leaders from the Christian Right in the development of a law against homosexuality in Uganda. The film examines the relationship between American and Ugandan religious leaders, and how these relationships impacted Uganda's political leaders, gay and lesbian community, and Ugandan society in general. "God Loves Uganda" (http://www.godlovesuganda.com/) premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 18th, 2013 and has screened at over 50 American and international film festivals, winning numerous awards. The film was completed before the law eventually passed in February 2014.
