Shakespeare’s Ophelia finds herself in a neo-Elizabethan Appalachian setting where Gertrude runs a brothel, Hamlet is called a "Rude Boy" and nothing is what it seems. Ophelia cuts a new path for herself in this mirrored world of word-scraps and cold sex.
"12 Ophelias" was written by Caridad Svich, an award-winning U.S. playwright. It has been described as "an ingenious adaptation of 'Hamlet'" and "smart, sly and witty" by John Gould Rubin, Co-Artistic Director/Executive Producer of the New York-based LAByrinth Theater Company.
Director William Johnson, Chair of Chico State's Department of Music and Theatre, noted that “12 Ophelias” has strong language and sexual themes and is "definitely not appropriate for children."
