The Sexual Politics of Meat (CFAR Event)
Dear Friends of Animals,
Chico For Animal Rights (C-FAR) is a Chico State-based animal rights club established in fall 2007. Our mission is to inform students and our community of the abuse that thousands of animals undergo on a daily basis. Our goal is to stop current inhumane treatment of animals and to prevent any future cases by volunteering and taking part in the community. C-FAR would like to invite you to Carol J. Adam’s presentation on her book, The Sexual Politics of Meat.
The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory, explores a relationship between patriarchal values and meat eating by interweaving the insights of feminism, vegetarianism, animal defense, and literary theory. The Sexual Politics of Meat Slide Show is a 1 and 1/4 hour dynamic and challenging presentation that discusses the images of women and animals in contemporary popular culture by drawing upon the ideas found in The Sexual Politics of Meat and Ms. Adam’s 2004 book, The Pornography of Meat. It draws upon images that have been sent from around the world and is constantly updated as Ms. Adams tracks changes in popular culture. The Slide Show provides an eco-feminist analysis of the interconnected oppressions of sexism, racism, and speciesism by exploring the way popular culture presents images of race, gender, and species.
After the slideshow is over there will be a Q & A period, where Ms. Adams will take questions from the audience. There will also be a book signing with books provided by the bookstore and a vegan reception. Informational literature about veganism/vegetarianism will also be provided with the free samples at the reception.
The event will take place on April 3rd, 8:00-10:00pm at Sylvester’s Café. We would greatly appreciate you passing this on to your members. Please join us for this mind-expanding experience we have worked very hard to bring to our campus.
Thank you for your time,
Mayra Diaz,
Vice President of Chico for Animal Rights
