Debate team wins big at national tournament

During the tail end of Spring Break, the Chico State debate team flew to Idaho for this year’s CEDA national debate tournament.  Graduating seniors Scott Laczko and Emily Parker both received All American debater awards (only 30 given out nationwide).  Not so novice debaters, Ryan Clare and Jordan Hampton, took 3rd place in the novice division losing to Florida.  Florida was coached by Chico Alum and former debater, Kris Willis.  Dr. Zach Justus was honored with this year’s Outstanding Alumni award for his work with FLO and the Great Debate.  Chico State received 2nd place in the Western Region in sweepstakes points for this year.  Lastly, Chico State also won the Founders Award.  This award is for the most cumulative CEDA points over the history of the organization to this point other than prior winners, who go back to zero after winning this award.  Alumni debaters and coaches all contributed to this award which goes back over three decades when professor Brydon was a coach.  All in all this was a great year for Chico State Forensics and, as always if you wish to join speech or debate for the upcoming school year contact Sue Peterson at sepeterson@csuchico.edu
