MWOW Presentation on Making Medical Diagnoses
The Northern California Natural History Museum (NCNHM) at California State University, Chico will present a discussion by Dr. Lester Wong, Enloe Medical Center Pathologist, as part of the Museum Without Walls series (MWOW).
Dr. Wong will present “The Art and Science of Making a Diagnosis,” at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Chico Area Recreation District (CARD) building, 545 Vallombrosa Ave., in Chico. A donation of $3 per adult is requested. Students with an ID are free. The programs are intended to be enjoyed by a general audience.
Despite many revolutionary breakthroughs in understanding disease processes and technological advances such as being able to interpret an individual’s genetic code, the best tools available to the pathologist are still a light microscope and training.

October Opens Freshman Application Period
The priority application period for students intending to enter California State University, Chico as first-time freshmen in fall 2009 began Oct. 1 and may close Nov. 30.
Challenges brought on by California’s current budget shortfall are forcing the California State University system to reduce increases in student enrollment, and, as a result, an early application will help students improve their chances to attend the CSU campus of their choice.
At least six of the university’s 23 campuses will close freshmen admissions on Nov. 30, 2008, including Fullerton, Long Beach, Pomona, San Diego, San Luis Obispo and Sonoma.
The complete news release is available online.

Dollars for American Cancer Society
Dollar Drive to Fight Cancer
Just one dollar from everyone on campus could raise more than $19,000 to fight cancer.
This month the University Relay For Life team is raising money for the American Cancer Society and asking the campus community to pitch in to find a cure for cancer. Look for volunteers collecting around campus or mail your contribution to zip 502.
The University Team Wildcat raised more than $25,000 last year and hopes to increase that amount by the April relay. They thank the campus and community for supporting their other fund raisers this year including the very successful yard sale and the benefit at Ben and Jerry’s.

Bank Scam Information from University Police
The University Police Department has received several inquiries this morning regarding an e-mail that is allegedly from Butte Community Bank. The e-mail is titled “Butte Community Bank Online Notice” and is sent with High importance. It is allegedly an invitation to participate in a survey. The recipient is promised either $90 or $100 (there are two variations of this e-mail in circulation) for completing the survey. Additionally, the recipient is asked to provide either account information or credit card information so that the money can be received once the survey is completed.
University Police have confirmed with Butte Community Bank that this e-mail is not legitimate. There is no on-line survey being conducted. Butte Community Bank wanted to stress to everyone who received this e-mail that a legitimate financial institution would never send out such a request. Please do not provide your personal account or credit card information to anyone without first verifying the legitimacy of the request.
Butte Community Bank has asked that all e-mails regarding this alleged survey be forwarded to: security@buttecommunity.net. Additionally, more information about this scam can be found at www.buttecommunity.com

Sustainability Summits I, II, III
Announcing: Sustainability Summits I, II, III
September 30, October 27 and December 2, Kendall 207/209 from 3pm - 5 pm
This semester we will hold three facilitated discussions about the following list of topics. Not every topic would be covered on any given date. Each conversation will be facilitated by a different person, depending on the topics. The purpose of the summits is to assess campus progress toward sustainability, compare ourselves to other “green” campuses, and determine the actions we will take to achieve our goals.
What does it mean to be a “green” campus?
How do we compare to other institutions within the CSU?
How do we compare to other campuses in the U.S. that have received recognition for being “green”?
What have we achieved to date and what are our commitments as a campus under the Presidents Climate Agreement?
Are there gaps in terms of our own achievements, compared to others?
How do we continue to create a culture of sustainability on campus?
How can and should we continue to integrate sustainability into the curriculum?
Let us know which topics you feel deserve the greatest attention, and if there are others you would like to see added to the list, please send them to Scott G. McNall at the Institute for Sustainable Development. We hope that students, faculty, staff and community members and partners will join together in deepening the conversation about a sustainable future.

Photography Exhibition Opens Today
AMERICAN VISIONS PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION GRAND OPENING
The 24th Annual American Visions Photography Competition will hold its grand opening reception Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008, in Kendall Hall’s Rotunda at 5:00pm.
This year’s competition was themed with “Visions of Leadership.” Contestants from around the United States, from locations such as New York City, Salt Lake City and Chico, submitted photographs portraying who they envision to be a leader and what qualities they posses. The photographs include political, social, and economic leaders in their communities and families.
A panel of three judges was chosen to judge the submissions: Chris Ficken, creative director of Academic Technologies; Jenn Daly, CSU, Chico photography instructor; and Dr. Brian Brazeal, visual anthropologist.
The photograph winning Best in Show will be presented with the first annual Dr. Valene Smith-Posey Award for Excellence in Visual Anthropology, a $500 award. Earlier this semester, Smith-Posey donated $3 million to the Museum of Anthropology. Three honorable mentions will also be recognized at the grand opening and reception, which is open to the public.
Light refreshments will be served.
