Background, Functions, and Purposes:

The unequivocal need to identify forensic scientists qualified to provide essential professional services for the nation's judicial and executive branches of government has long been recognized. In response to this professional mandate, the American Board of Forensic Anthropology was organized in 1977 to provide, in the interest of the public and the advancement of the science, a program of certification in forensic anthropology. In purpose, function, and organization, the ABFA is thus analogous to the certifying boards in various medical specialties and scientific fields.

The objectives of the Board are: (a) to encourage the study of, improve the practice of, establish and enhance standards for, and advance the science of forensic anthropology; (b) to encourage and promote adherence to high standards of ethics, conduct, and professional practice in forensic anthropology; (c) to grant and issue certificates, and/or other recognition, in cognizance of special qualification in forensic anthropology to voluntary applicants who conform to the standards established by the Board and who have established their fitness and competence thereof; (d) to inform the appropriate branches of federal and state governments and private agencies of the existence and nature of the ABFA and the professional quality of its Diplomates for the practice of forensic anthropology; (e) to maintain and furnish lists of individuals who have been granted certificates by the Board. In this way the ABFA aims to make available to the judicial system, and others, a practical and equitable system for readily identifying those persons professing to be specialists in forensic anthropology who possess the requisite qualifications and competence.

Certification is based upon the candidate's personal and professional record of education and training, experience, and achievement, as well as on results of formal examinations.

The Board is a non-profit organization incorporated in the District of Columbia. It is composed of officers and other directors, who serve staggered terms and are elected from among nominees of designated nominating organizations, or serve at-large.

Forensic Anthropology Defined:

Forensic anthropology is the application of the science of physical anthropology to the legal process. The identification of skeletal, badly decomposed, or otherwise unidentified human remains is important for both legal and humanitarian reasons. Forensic anthropologists apply standard scientific techniques developed in physical anthropology to identify human remains, and to assist in the detection of crime. Forensic anthropologists frequently work in conjunction with forensic pathologists, odontologists, and homicide investigators to identify a decedent, discover evidence of foul play, and/or the postmortem interval. In addition to assisting in locating and recovering suspicious remains, forensic anthropologists work to suggest the age, sex, ancestry, stature, and unique features of a decedent from the skeleton.

Applicants for Certification in the ABFA

The Application:

Information regarding certification is currently being revised. Applicants should contact the ABFA Secretary for details.

Preliminary Qualifications:

* An applicant must be a permanent resident of the United States, Canada, or their territories.
* The applicant must possess an earned Doctoral degree in Anthropology with an emphasis in Physical Anthropology. Since forensic anthropologists are often involved in the identification of unknown individuals from an examination of their bones and teeth, advanced study in human osteology, human anatomy, and dental anthropology is required.
* Following receipt of the Doctoral degree, applicants must possess at least three years of full-time professional experience, all or in part devoted to the practice of forensic anthropology.
* Applicants must document a record of appropriate professional activities in forensic anthropology.

Diplomate Status:

* The right to deny Certification is reserved by the ABFA.
* Successful candidates are issued a Certificate of Qualification in Forensic Anthropology by the Board to attest to their status as Diplomates of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology, and are listed in the next revision of the Directory of Diplomates.
* Certificates of Qualification in Forensic Anthropology are valid for three (3) years, and are renewable according to standards and conditions established by the ABFA, at an appropriate fee.
* Persons holding a valid Certification of Qualification issued by the ABFA are entitled to use the designation "Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology" and the initials "DABFA" whenever professionally appropriate.
* Certificates issued by the Board are not transferable, and remain the property of the ABFA. Every person to whom a Certificate has been properly issued is entitled to its continued possession unless and until such Certification is revoked.
* Yearly re-certification is required of all Diplomates. Normally it is achieved by completing and filing the appropriate
Re-Certification Form as well as re-affirming a commitment to the ABFA Ethics Policy. Both documents should be provided to the Vice President by February 1st of the year following that being reviewed.

Retirement:

* Any Diplomate in good standing and having been in good standing for a minimum of ten years, may request in writing to the
President or Secretary that s/he be given retired status. Such a request will be placed on the agenda of the next meeting of the Board of Directors, and if by majority vote the Board concurs, the Diplomate will be notified by the President or Secretary that retired status has been granted, and that such status will be so entered on the roll. The notification will also inform the retired Diplomate that (1) s/he no longer has the responsibilities and rights of active Diplomate status other than attendance with voice but no vote at annual Board meetings; (2) s/he must in any reference to their relationship to the Board, verbally or in writing, clearly indicate their retired status by using the appellation DABFA (ret.); and (3) retired status is irrevocable except by a subsequent finding by the Board of Directors that the Diplomate would not have remained in good standing had a matter occurring before retirement status was granted been finally adjudicated.
