In
1967, Dr. Urbanowicz received his B.A. in Sociology/Anthropology from Western
Washington University. His interest in Anthropology brought him to the
M.A. program at the University of Oregon where he not only received an
M.A. but a Ph.D. in Anthropology. His dissertation dealt with the South
Pacific island of Tonga.
During his research on the island he formed an alliance with the King of
Tonga and became well adapted to the life style of a South Pacific islander.
In 1973, Dr. Urbanowicz became a faculty member at California State University,
Chico. Where he has become an instrumental asset in keeping the Anthropology
Department at CSU Chico "in the now", so to speak. Dr. Urbanowicz is a
firm believer in keeping up with the times and incorporates and encourages
his students to use the internet as much as possible. In 1998 he was invited
to participate in "Getting Connected" Orientation Activities and has since
been mentoring students as part of the Student-Resident-Assistant program.
As well as being a tremendous support for the students in the Anthropology,
Dr. Urbanowicz along with Dr. Carolyn Heinz designed the department
home page. And as a result of his hard work Dr. Urbanowicz was designated
a "Master
Teacher" for the 1997-1999 academic years.
Dr. Urbanowicz's
current work includes numerous lectures on Charles
Darwin, designing a interactive timeline on Charles Darwin (which should
be on the web soon!), piecing together a video on Darwin, an anthropological
look into the Native
American Gaming Industry, and instructing students on the history
and methods of anthropological research. Dr. Urbanowicz is an inspiration
to his peers and students. All those who have had contact with Dr. Urbanowicz
agree that he is a man who can open the minds of his students and eloquently
points out different avenues of success.
