Prospective Graduate Students
Graduate Program Mission Statement
It is the mission of the graduate program in Anthropology to provide our students opportunities for advanced study of theory, methodologies and professional applications in the four subfields of the discipline: physical, cultural, archaeology, and museum studies. The program recognizes its task to prepare students for future research, scholarship, and practice in professional careers, to make creative contributions to anthropology and related fields, and to imbue in its students a sense of social responsibility to cultures within regional and world communities.
How to Apply to Our Graduate Program
The Department of Anthropology accepts applicants for graduate study for the Fall semester only. Completed applications are due January 5th.
There are two different addresses to which materials are to be sent.
Items to be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies (Graduate School Admissions; CSU-Chico 95929-0875):
a. Application form and additional information is available at the Graduate School web page, click to link
b. Application fee of $55 or waiver form
c. One official transcript from each postsecondary school attended; and Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores with at least 150 for verbal and 150 for quantitative or 1080 combined under previous system, (CSU, Chico code is 4048). Please do not send official transcripts to the Department of Anthropology.
Items to be submitted to the Department of Anthropology, CSU Chico:
a. A letter of intent that is no more than two pages long (double-spaced) and includes: (1) a brief autobiographical sketch, (2) a statement of your goals and specific subfield interests in anthropology and our graduate program; (3) why and how CSU, Chico can help you achieve your goals; and (4) any other information that may serve to distinguish you from other applicants.
b. Two letters of recommendation (sending more will not assist you). Please download and fill out the Letter of Recommendation Waiver Form and sign the waiver form and have the two recommenders include the form with their letters upon submission of the letters. Letters can be sent by the recommender either by mail or email to firstname.lastname@example.org. If sending by email, they must clearly put in the subject line "letter of recommendation" and student's name.
c. One copy of your updated Curriculum Vitae or resume
d. Writing sample (i.e, term paper, publications)

Due to the number of students applying to our MA Program in Anthropology, as well as the MA degree in Museum Studies Option, the Department seldom accepts students whose grade point average is lower than 3.0 in their last 60 semester units (or 90 quarter units) of undergraduate work. Consideration for the graduate program also includes Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores of at least 150 for verbal and 150 for quantitative (1080 combined under the previous system).
Note: Although the Department of Anthropology's January 5th deadline is when we begin the selection process for fall candidates, we will consider applications until March 1st, but we advise getting your application materials in by January 5th.
Applicants must either have a baccalaureate degree or, if the degree is expected by the time of admittance, must be in good academic standing at the institution they are attending. The degree granting institution must be accredited by a regional accrediting association. If, however, a prospective graduate student is a graduate of a non-accredited institution that is judged by the Office of Graduate Studies to be acceptable, the student may apply for admission under special circumstances.
