Nothing is more romanticised, though in a rather silent and staid way for the Maithil Brahmans, than the meeting of bride and groom in the Kohbara Ghar. Therefore it receives by far the most lavish artistic attention from women of the family. These paintings are heavy with symbolic and magical purpose as well as beautiful.

The central feature is always a large display of the lotus plant (puren), with six smaller leaves surrounding a larger central leaf. In some versions, the leaves have feminine faces smiling out from them.

The first night at the bride's house older women sing folksongs and let the couple be near each other--without any physical contact. In a similar room at the groom's house, bride and groom will finally be together alone for the first time.
