Pond scenes like this are ubiquitous throughout Mithila. Their rich and mysterious fertility have come to symbolize feminine powers. The wall paintings of the kohbara ghar feature the fertile lotus plant (puren).

Puren is a variant on the kohbar theme; it also represents the abundantly verdent lotus plant which clogs all the many ponds of Mithila where women go to bathe, wash their pots, and perform brief rites associated with a woman's life stages. In Brahman households, puren is the figure which appears prominently on the walls of the kohbara ghar, the marriage house.

Puren is also a popular theme in the paper art, where the artists attempts to fit onto a rectangular piece of paper all the images which would have to appear on the actual wall of a marriage chamber.
