A
Brief History of the Brothers of Eta Psi
|
|
World
War II had ended only three years ago. The United States was entering
a period of incredible wealth and growth as the post-depression
years promised new hope and the cold war (be it bad or good) promised
a lively economy. With the majority of Americans in stable condition,
they could now focus on the problems of the less advantaged. One
arena in which to provide such service was at the college level,
where thousands of war veterans were now appearing.
In
1948, at the Chico State College, 20 college men decided to activate
a chapter of Alpha Phi Omega. After months of hard work and recruitment,
they were recognized nationally on June 19, 1949. The years of service
that followed are not recorded well, unfortunately. To this day,
founders of ETA Psi are still alive, and some currently reside in
Chico. For unknown reasons ETA Psi deactivated in 1958, presumably
for lack of active members.
On
April 17, 1964, ETA Psi reactivated, and under the capable leadership
of foundering President Warren Rommeburg, and his administration:
Ron Wakefield, Rich Bartel, Jim Rose and Jim Morris, Mr. Russ Freeland
and Dr. John Sutthoff the fraternity grew and prospered throughout
the mid-sixties and early seventies.
During
these years the true flavor of the ETA Psi chapter was formed. Renowned
throughout the Region and Section as the most lively chapter that
worked hard and partied harder, ETA Psi won many spirit awards and
added new dimensions to the west coast's perception of Brotherhood.
In fact, at a Region X conference in Seattle, WA, a spirit award
which had never before existed was created for ETA Psi. Stories
of rolling kegs to the parties and pledges performing the infamous
"Weenie Song" (variations on the Oscar Meyer Weiner Tune) at all
times were not easily forgotten.
It
was during this period that ETA Psi kept an unofficial house, whereby
through agreement with a friendly landlord, Brothers could continue
to rent out a house on 622 W. 6th St., affectionately known as the
"Moonlight Ranch" (which is still standing!). In fact, many Brothers
also lived on that block or very close to it, creating almost an
ETA Psi City of Brothers all close to one another. Many a stry derive
from this block, including the famous invitation of the Brother
of Omicron Zeta from Hayward State. So enthralled with the social
atmosphere a house provided after a party they attended, the Brother
attempted to obtain a similar situation back home. Rumor has it
that at the party ETA Psi, quite frankly, drank them under the table.
While
we were famous for our social graces in our Region, ETA Psi also
carried a well-known and highly commended program of service within
the Chico campus and community. Such projects as the Sheriffs Toy
Drive, boasting the Ugly Man on Campus charity fundraiser, giving
official campus tours in our tram (yes--a real tram!), gaining funds
for and building a campus activity sign which the Pledges had the
weekly responsibility of changing messages. Chico State's administration
loved ETA Psi. So close were the Brothers that the Chico State President
and his wife would host dinners for the chapter at their personal
mansion, the Julia Morgan House.
