A Brief History of the Brothers of Eta Psi
|
|
Finally,
the PG had prepared for enough time and proved themselves worthy.
It may be noted that without the valuable and relentless effort
and help of Allen Wong and Sectional Rep Idamay Clark, ETA Psi would
still be an idea. For their incredible efforts the two were voted
Honorary members. More importantly still, they were awarded ETA
Psi's new and highest prestige, the Golden Turkey with Crossed Feathers
and the Golden Turkey Award, respectively. After approval from the
National Board of Driector's, ETA Psi reactivated on May 9, 1992.
Brother from chapters all around came to celebrate in ETA Psi's
Hawaiian Luau Theme banquet. The guest list included Wilfred Krenek
(then National VP) who met us at the regional convention and flew
in from Texas, the past National President and Fall 1993 National
Pledge Class Namesake Earle M. Herbert and a variety of Regional
and Sectional Officers and friends. In what was to become typical
form, ETA Psi held a spirited and well organized dance and banquet
and set new standards in inexpensive, yet fun-filled activities--which
always include the "party after the party".
After
reactivation, ETA Psi set forth to build its first Pledge Class
in 14 years. Under the administration of Dominic Ielati, and with
a healthy 20 pledges in Fall of 1992, the chapter began with a roaring
start. The unofficial house became "the Ranch", a 1/2 acre of land
at 818 Pomona Ave, named for it's size and in honor of the former
"Moonlight Ranch" from days gone by. During this semester the chapter
held it's first Sectional event, the CPW. The CPW was heralded as
one of the most organized and well-run in recent history. The party
at the Ranch that followed brought the leadership of most every
chapter to experience ETA Psi hospitality, a hospitality that lead
officers to gasp how much fun a chapter social could be.
Under
the administration of Bobbi Johnston, the chapter held a Chapter
Planning Program Conference at Black Butte Lake. The honest and
no-bull approach of evaluating our chapter lead to a great Fall
1993. The "great" Fall 1993 semester arrived in August with the
returning of officers ad actives to Chico. Prospects of the coming
semester was greeted with great anticipation. The new "unofficial"
at 1735 Magnolia Ave soon came to be christened the "Country Club",
where 3 officers, a soon to be Brother, and a friend of the many
Brothers lived. The fall semester, through much work, and nervousness
of the Brothers lead by President Bobbi Johnston-Wieglein, ETA Psi
gained 5 strong individuals who under the guidance of Chris Shavor,
otherwise known at the time as "PMS" for PledgeMaster Shavor, learned
and grew into the livelihood of service which ETA Psi had to offer.
The
semester brought on several new projects and socials to ETA Psi's
calendar. We began by going to Black Butte Lake for camp clean-up,
and to Books farm at Halloween where some Brothers got together
and made a scarecrow, complete with letters from Honorary Brother
Charlie Mullins. The tradition of having formal pledge-active socials
began, ranging from the standard ice cream social to the graffiti
party. In November, with the leadership of Monique Roberts and Bobbi
Johnston-Weiglein the chapter was lead in an inter-chapter leadership
workshop called "GOBBLE"--Gathering Of Brothers Building Leadership.
One of the social highlights was the murder mystery party.
The
pledge period ended on Dec. 4, with the initiation of 5 new Brothers.
The initiation dinner was headed by Jennifer Weiglein, and the hights
of many was the "Charlie Brown Christmas Tree", and snowflakes covering
the ceiling of the hall at the Newman Center. Spring 94 brought
to ETA Psi a new President, Kris Cameron, and 12 very strong vivacious
Brothers who gave a new meaning to service and social. Notable projects
included the Twin Oaks Convalescent Home, MS Walk-A-Thon, and the
Little League baseball field cleanup Eleven Brothers traveled to
Dallas for the National Convention, DEC 1994, up from the 5 that
attended Boston in 1992, and we established ourselves as one of
the 4 places to be to have a good time.
ETA
Psi hosted its first sectional conference in Feb. 1995, which was
attended by over 60 Brothers from the section and region. "Gittin'
Down and Dirty for Service" once again showed that ETA Psi parties
hard and does service even harder. The highlight was Bob Boos and
Chris Shavor arriving to the banquet in drag to repay a debt from
the Sectionals in Hayward the previous semester. The honor of dressing
them went to Reg X Director Teri Sheets and ETA Psi Brother Catherine
Bergstrom, who made the highest bid for the honor.
The
Fall of 95 brought 7 new Brothers to ETA Psi, the "Save the Turkey"
Thanksgiving Progressive Dinner, and the hugely successful Canned
Food Scavenger Hunt to assist a local group with their food baskets.
12 Brothers ventured to Sac St. for sectionals, and 14 went to Portland
for the Reg X conference.
