Examination Accommodations

The purpose of exam accommodations is to provide an equal testing opportunity based on the functional limitations of the student. "Test," as used in this context, refers to quizzes and examinations taken in conjunction with an academic class.

Test accommodations are determined on a case-by-case basis and may include:

  • Extended time to complete examinations and quizzes;
  • A reduced-distraction environment separate from the class;
  • Special equipment such as a word processor or CCTV
  • Readers and/or scribes; and
  • Accessible formats such as oral or taped tests.

Please note: This accommodation must be approved by their Accessibility Resource Center Advisor, and will depend on the symptoms and severity of the student's disability.

Exam and Quizzes are proctored Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Other times can be arranged individually by contacting the Testing Coordinator. Final Exams are proctored.

Tests are scheduled in the Student Services Building, Room 170. During high volume times, such as midterms and finals, tests may be administered in other locations. Students will be notified when there are test location changes.

Request Process

  1. Students must submit a new request for each exam using the Service Request Portal.
  2. Requests must be submitted at least three days prior to the exam. Midterm and final exams must be submitted 5 days prior to the exam.
  3. Rescheduled exams require instructor permission or verification.

Guidelines

  • The exam begins at the time originally scheduled. If students arrive 30 minutes late or more, he/she will not be allowed to begin the exam without instructor approval and may need to reschedule the exam.
  • Same Day cancellations: Students should call the Testing Coordinator at 530-898-5959 if unable to make an exam due to an illness, an emergency, or if taking the exam in class.
  • Timely Cancellations: Other cancellations should be made using the Services Request Portal.
  • Students who want to reschedule exams should do so using the Services Request Portal.
  • Breaks are not permitted after an exam begins unless a student has am approved "break" accommodation. It is advisable to use the restroom in advance of the start of an exam. Unscheduled breaks are reported to faculty.
  • All students are expected to follow appropriate University Codes of Conduct during an exam.
  • Use of unauthorized materials during exam is reported in writing when the exam is returned to the instructor.
  • Cell phones, pagers, and programmable wrist watches must remain outside the testing room, turned off, and placed in a backpack.
  • The test proctor at the start of the exam will inspect all test materials before the student is allowed to begin an exam.
  • Extended time (only) on web based exams do not need to be requested through the Service Request Portal. Requests are made directly to faculty who can extend the time for specific students and specific exams.

Standardized Tests

Tests administered by an institution other than the California State University

The SAT, GRE, ACT and other tests used as part of the University's entrance requirement or for assessing professional competency are administered by private testing companies. Each testing company has its own procedure for arranging accommodated testing. Typically, instructions for requesting accommodations are listed on the test company's website under "arrangements for alternative test administration."

When registering for the test and requesting accommodations, testing companies often require a copy of a person's original, current documentation and/or a letter on letterhead from a person (such as a high school counselor) who is qualified to confirm that the individual has a documented disability and has been receiving accommodations. The registration form and the request for accommodation with the appropriate documentation are then mailed to the testing company weeks before the test registration deadline. The testing company will notify you if you are approved for accommodated testing. The campus Test Office where you will test is also notified and may contact you about arrangements.

CSU Placement Tests

Tests administered by the California State University for placement purposes

The EPT and ELM are placement tests in English and math that are required of most first time freshmen and some transfer students. You may take these tests at a CSU campus close to your home. You should request accommodations from the CSU campus where you will take the exam rather than the campus where you intend to enroll. Most branches of the CSU have a procedure similar to ours for requesting accommodation on the ELM and EPT. You should call the Accessibility Resource Center office or Testing Office at the CSU nearest you to determine what their exact procedures are for procuring ELM/EPT accommodations.

Request Process at Chico State

  1. If you want to take the EPT and ELM at CSU, Chico with accommodations, contact the Accessibility Resource Center (ARC) office on Chico's campus well in advance of the test registration deadline. Tell us that you intend to take the ELM and/or EPT here.
  2. We will ask you to supply us with a copy of your current disability documentation via fax, mail, or by dropping it off in person. We will ask you what accommodation you are asking for and we will check that your documentation supports this.
  3. We will then forward a Request for Testing Accommodation form to our Testing Office listing the appropriate accommodation for you.
  4. You also need to contact the Chico State Testing Office to register for the ELM and/or EPT before the test deadline. Make sure you notify them that you are requesting accommodations and that you have contacted our office.
