4th Annual Summer Art Academy Begins in July

The Janet Turner Print Museum at CSU, Chico hosts the fourth annual Summer Art Academy this July and August.

"The goal of the Janet Turner Print Museum's Summer Art Academy is to provide excellent art instruction using many mediums for students with a desire to be immersed in art for a concentrated time," said Barbara Morris, director and founder of the Summer Art Academy.

Junior Session (ages 7-11) is held July 24-28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Senior Session I (ages 12 to adult) is July 24-28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Senior Session II (ages 12 to adult) is July 31-Aug. 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Morris began the Summer Art Academy in 2003 as part of the Turner Print Museum's educational outreach program. "As a parent, I know how important arts education and engaging summer activities can be."

The academy has grown each year since its inception. It began as a one-week camp split into two age groups. Due to its success, three sessions are being held this year. The first session accommodates students 7-11 years old and includes both 2-dimentional and 3-dimentional activities. Two sessions are offered for students ages 12 to adult. Their program is separated into 3-D projects the first week and 2-D work the second.

Each session accommodates 24 students. Spots fill up quickly, however, as most participants are returning students, said Morris. Classes are offered in the Art and Art History Department at Chico State. Student/teacher ratio has been 4 students per 1 instructor. The senior session's ratios vary slightly with each activity, as they need less "hands on" guidance.

Older students are given a "major" assignment in ceramics, printmaking, painting, and sculpture. Although exact lesson plans are being finalized, students will experience working with in a variety of ways with a cornucopia of art materials.

Printmaking techniques include, relief prints, drypoint engraving, viscosity prints and cliché vera. This years older student will work collaboratively on a relief print as well as printing both on paper and fabric. All printmakers will work their prints as part of a multi-step, mixed-media piece.

Painters will use acrylic and water color paints as part of their mixed-media piece. "We will explore perspective and portraiture as well as negative and positive space by utilizing paints and pencils when working from a still life," said Morris.

Other 2 dimensional works will be inspired by Matisse."We will also use shapes in a 3 dimensional way to build up a sculptural scene or to make mobiles," noted Morris. The older students who choose the three dimensional session will experience reductive as well as additive ways of working.  "We will also do some large scale 3-D environmental work in the mode of Christo or Andy Goldsworthy, as well as small scale 'scenes in a matchbox.'"

"We hope  to offer older campers instruction on making pinhole cameras," Morris said.

Younger students enjoy a wide variety of art instruction, with assignments geared toward a shorter attention span. More complex work is interspersed with fun quick activities. This enables children who work more slowly and deliberately to work along side those who finish more quickly. There is an intern at each table of children to help with instruction and to supervise the classroom.

They will make masks which they then paint and decorate. All lessons touch on the historical importance of working in a particular way. "We introduce students to films, slides and photographic examples of well known artists. We hope to include lessons in papermaking in conjunction with binding a sketchbook and creating hand made covers."

Students also makes a personalized T-shirts to be used as a smock or design aprons to be used during printmaking.

Lunch will be provided by Creative Catering, Sultans Bistro, Belle Fricke, and a special pizza day at Celestino's.

The cost per student is $250. A discount of $50 is available for additional family members, or if enrolled in both Senior Sessions.

Janet Turner's Legacy
"A main goal of this academy is to keep Janet's name and ideals in the public eye," said Morris. "Janet was first and foremost a teacher of printmaking. We wish to honor all she gave to her students and to the University by creating an environment for students to explore and increase their knowledge and skills in art, but especially in printmaking. By providing the public with this academy, we help keep Janet's vision and drive alive."The Janet Turner Print Museum, a program in the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, is named after late Chico State faculty member Janet Turner, an internationally known printmaker and educator, who felt that students should have the opportunity to learn from and be inspired by original art. Her extensive collection is used widely on campus. The prints span decades and include many printmaking processes, many aesthetic choices, and a wide variety of artists. These prints are accessible to students, faculty and the public.
