We had a starry sky, an iridium flare, 4 species of owls calling and 4 NSWO in the nets.  Spontaneously calling were a N. pygmy owl and female and young Great-horned owl.  A western screech owl called as we were processing our last owl, and we had a few calls from N. saw-whet owl (NSWO).  However, it was generally quiet from the NSWO so we were occasionally surprised to find one in the net. Lots of hermit thrush vocalizations at dusk. Following are the result:

Birds captured: 4 NSWO- 2 HY, 1 SY, 1 ASY (see pics); all girls
Detections: deer, bats (Michelle suggested Mastiff!), NOPO, WESO, GHOW, NSWO,T.swans overhead.

Photo is dorsal and ventral wing of an after second year (probably a bird in her 3rd year) female NSWO- showing 3 feather generations. Thanks for the photos Steve!

The big storm was just subsiding when we decided to go out and give it a try.  Light wind and an 80 to 90% cloud cover greeted us at the banding site.  After clearing a few downed limbs from the storm we were able to get into the site and set up the nets.  Last time out was just before the storm and this time was immediately after. Again we had high expectations for owl activity.  We heard a GHOW early in the evening but this time it called for only a few minutes then quit.  Overall it was very quiet hearing NSWOs only three times all night long, interestingly only after our capture.  On our 5th net run we captured the only NSWO of the evening.   Steve King took a series of photos as Raina and I processed the owl.  Anyone interested can view them at

It was a very quiet night for the official start of the NSWO season.  We had high hopes for some captures after our success the previous Wednesday.  It was also just before the storm which we thought might cause the owls to get moving.  But it was not to be.  We did have a very active GHOW calling most of the night close to us and that may have had an impact keeping the small owls away.  Only one NSWO was heard all evening.

Well, we decided to try one more time for the tail end of the NSWO spring migration at BCCER.  We had heard two NSWOs last time out but captured none.  It was a perfect night, dark, partly cloudy, and calm.  Only problem was there were no NSWOs.  We heard a NOPO tooting as we arrived and it continued for 15 or 20 minutes.  The usual assortment of critters were out and some late geese ( likely White-fronted) flew over.  Our only capture was a small bat, see photo.  Other than that it was just another beautiful night at the reserve.  Here are the results:

Spring NSWO migration  continues at the BCCER.  Tonight we captured one new very petite male (see pic), weighing in at a whopping 74 grams and a wing chord (wrist to longest primary) of 132 mm.  Our recap female weighed 87 grams (we've had them over 100gr) with a wing chord of 145 mm.  This female was ~ 13 grams heavier, about the mass of a Hutton's vireo.  There of course is some overlap but when the birds are at the outer ends of their range, there is a very obvious difference, even when you walk up to the net.  The recap was from March 20th, 2009.  We had a couple of vocalizations including chirps and a tooting male at the end of our night. The crew was ready to continue on but I needed to call it a night.  We will hopefully continue to get out until we have no more captures/detections.  Following are the results:

Captures: 1 pallid bat, 2 NSWO; 1 SY/male, 1 SY female
Detections: bats, wild turkeys, NSWO, some mammal- maybe a bobcat?

Our owl project focuses on fall movement so spring efforts were limited and inconsistent.  The only previous March date I have captures for is on March 10, where we caught 4 owls at the lower site, BCEP.  We don't really know the full time range for the upslope or northerly movement, but it's great to have a banding team who has time and energy to help work it out- thanks!!

After Mike and Steve were successful in capturing a couple of new owls last friday we thought we should continue our efforts to determine spring migration timing of N. Saw-whet owls in our area.  Our rather impromptu banding turned out to be a very cool, clear, star-loaded evening, complete with 3 owls.  We captured one each on our first and second net runs and later a recapture from the previous Friday.  We also heard some chirps and a tooting male, competeing with the speakers, which may have been our last capture (HY/U). I've been asked if we ever get tired of the banding the same species.  A peek at the photo should anwer that question!

All, we conducted an experiment opening both BCEP site, the lower elevation site off of Honey Run Road on Butte Creek and the upper elevation site at BCCER upland habitats of Big Chico Creek canyon, to see if saw-whet owls were moving through the area to upslope/north breeding grounds.  Two weeks ago we had captured 2 owls at the lower site and figured the birds were still wintering since one was a recapture from January 2009.  We were unable to get out over the last two weeks but made it last night.  At the lower site- NO detections, NO captures, at the upper site they heard 2 different owls and captured 2 owls.  Fortunately we all got to see a cool iridium flare that Steve alerted us to, and the night was quite mild and clear with constellations and stars very clear.  We will likely attempt another night or two to determine presence/absence in the next week.  Following are the results.

Detections:  Iridum flare at 20:25:52  cool! and flock of snow geese overhead at 21:00, spotted towhee

All, in attempts to identify spring migration in N. saw-whet owls, we went out a couple of nights.  Based on our limited efforts the past years, we have captured owls in Jan, Feb and March.  One night, March 10/07 we had 4 captures and vocalizing saw-whets; I assumed this was a migration period.  Our efforts this year indicate birds are likely still wintering, and/or we have a mix of wintering and early migrants. Tonight we had a recap from Jan 09 (indicating wintering) and a new, after third-year female owl (pic- thanks Steve!)  She may be wintering or is migrating, or both!   We will probably go out a couple more times in March, so email if you are interested.  Following are the results of our 2 efforts:

Birds captured: 2 hermit thrushes (dusk) and 2 NSWO, 1 recap from Jan '09

One of the things I like best about bird banding is that you just never know what is going to happen.  Armed with low expectations and a new audio lure recorded by Steve King, we set up nets at Owl 3 in the BCCER last night.  It was a clear and dark night prior to the moonrise about 8pm.  What a surprise when on our second net run we had a NSWO.  This is quite early as most of our owls have been caught later in the evening this season .  On the third net run we caught another NSWO and on the fourth another.  All in the first half of the evening!  Owls continued calling all night but we captured no others.  Three owls ties the most captured in a single night this season.  So, the million dollar question, Is the season almost over or does it have a little life left in it?

I was remiss about posting on the 7th, as I am somewhat uninspired of our huge netting efforts this year with very few birds.  Of course, negative data is still very valuable (just not as interesting!).  Fortunately Mike hit an evening during our "dry spell" where the owls were actively calling and moving about- maybe a late movement?  The last two attempts by my crew were later evening attempts- staying open past midnight to determine if the later/earlier window made a difference in detections.  Both nights were very quiet.  Last night the moon was so bright we hardly needed our flashlights to check nets (see pic, net at night).  We had one recap Western Screech owl from 1 month ago. Check out pics of screech feet (sparsely feathered) vs. NSWO (fully feathered).  Following are the details.

Birds captured: 1 Western Screech owl

Detections: 1 group Tundra swans, 1 NSWO distant, 1 WESO distant.  Lower site detection-played tape at 00:30- heard 1 NSWO at 00:40.

Last night we went up to the forest ranch site and captured 2 owls, a female and an unknown, likely a male.  A mere 2 grams would have placed it into the male category.  Sex is determined by wing chord measure and mass, and males are typically easy to tell because they are very petite in comparison to the females.  It was another beautiful starry, moonless night and the coolest thing was a space event called an iridium flare that Steve King alerted Raina to.  At the predicted time, 7:32 and 10 seconds, we watched the glow of an iridium satellite grow large and bright just before moving behind the conifers.  Apparently the sun hits this type of satellite at the appropriate angle and whhoooooosh!, it grows into a fiery ball before returning back to it's normal satellite appearance crossing the sky.  I have attached a U-tube video (not ours)  link so you can have an idea of what we saw- very cool!
Regarding owls, I still believe the push is yet to come.....

We had a lot of fun last night!
Our night started with a N. pygmy owl spontaneously calling.  Skies were perfectly clear with hundreds of stars and no moon.  At least one individual male flew around the perimeter of the nets competing in a tooting fest with the boom box. He sat right over our heads for at least 5 minutes. We had many NSWO vocalizations and one W. screech owl.  Alita entertained us with her conversation including a question as to why she hasn't seen me in high heels and a skirt. Scott commented that indeed, heels would make good soil aerators.
We managed to capture 3  NSWO, including a recapture from 10/17/2008.  One was fairly infested with the nasty flat "hippoboscid" flies.  They crawl around sideways in and out of the feathers, sucking blood from their host- positively gross critters! Mike happened to take a good photo of one we removed from a bird (it is missing a wing). As Mike and I were closing up, we had another saw-whet over-head chirping.  We heard a tremendous noise from on the ridge which I thought was firecrackers.  But, seeing no flashes, we determined a big tree had fallen.  On our way out a great-horned owl flew off.  Driving home- a huge meteor fell through the sky and hung in the air like a giant bulb.  Cool!

October 19 nets were closed shortly after opening due to a fox hanging around in the area and nets.   We can't be sure this is the same fox that I have photographed on 2 separate occasions, but it is possible, even though it was at the lower site. Regardless, foxes will predate owls and if we keep seeing them in the area we may have to close shop early.  Biologists at the reserve say there is a boon in gray fox populations this year. I wonder if it could be related to the fires, maybe not more productivity, but movement into unburned areas?

Tonight October 20, the friendly fox was coming to the processing station and later we saw it along the trail to our nets.  Even though it was tempting to have a fox in camp, we know ultimately it is bad for foxes to hang out with people (and owls) so we ran, hollered and generally surprised the fox, and hopefully we won't see it again.  We captured a very grumpy silver-haired bat and one ASY NSWO.

It appears owls are trickling in, with 2 captures tonight.  We had several vocalizations including a tooting male, and likely 2 individuals at a time, but it is difficult to say how many are actually out there.  We also had 2 N. pygmy owl and our foxy friend came to visit us again.  We have determined the fox is either a hand-raised releasee, or fed from someones backyard.  She (petite, maybe just a teen?) is  unafraid and appears to be looking for a handout. We hope she resorts to her wild instincts on the reserve.  The animal is beautiful and incredibly feline in her vulpineness (see pic)!  Upon returning the banding gear to the shed we saw  2 does and a fawn, 1 jackrabbit, and heard a pair of GH owls.  Female was giving her "hrank" call, male hooting.

We made a short run tonight- hoping for the beginning of owl season.  We did detect at least 1 NSWO in the area.  No owl net captures and I don't expect much until we get another weather front coming through (not predicted anytime soon!). Next night out is Friday, 10/17.  Following are the results of our owling efforts:

Captures: 1 pallid bat
Detections: 3 N. Pygmy owl, NSWO (at least 1 heard), 1 W. Screech owl

We banded up at OWL2, thinking the denser conifer cover might help hide the full moon.  It was a beautiful and warm evening.  Very quiet with one short toot sequence from a NSWO and potentially a wail later in the night.  We had another odd noise, that sounded most like a woodpecker tapping.  We thought maybe a squirrel gnawing on something or perhaps bill clacking from an owl.  Despite the quiet evening we had some activity, a NSWO and our first of season W. Screech owl.  We also had a visit from a gray fox! who seemed quite calm ~15' from us and leisurely walked by us, while seemingly hunting for rodents.  See attached photos for the cool wildlife.  I do think we are early for any real numbers and will probably need a good front to move the birds.

Owls captured:
1 NSWO (SY/F- recaptured 2 net runs later)
1 WESO (U/HY)

Five of us set up for the long haul at BCCER hoping to get some owl action.  We opened nets again at 19:00 hours. It was calm as we opened with mild breezes blowing off and on through the night.  The moon was almost full and very bright.  By 20:00 we heard our first NSWO call.  It or others called almost hourly all evening until we closed the nets at 23:00 hours.  At leas two different birds were heard  at one point.  Still, none found the nets.  No geese were heard and only one hoot from a GHOW.

Jennifer Patten and I set-up for owls at BCCER Saturday evening.  We opened the nets at 19:00.   As we were setting up we flushed a flock of about 10 roosting Band-tailed Pigeons out of a nearby tree.  It was a clear, cold and increasingly breezy night.  We had a very bright moon the whole time out.  The only detection was a single calling NSWO at about 19:40.  It called for about 30 minutes but never came into the nets.  Shortly thereafter we heard a GHOW hooting.  No geese were heard.  We closed the nets at 21:30 as the wind picked up.  Overall a very pleasant evening to be out.

We went up to our Forest Ranch site (~3,000'- thanks Brad!) to see if there was any activity upslope.  All was quiet until an hour into our session and then a male NSWO flew in high in the trees and started tooting, competing with the big silver owl below (the boom box).  He continued to deliver toots, wails and squirrel chirps but based on his vocalizations, never dropped down low toward the nets.  He vocalized for about .5 hour and then we had silence.

Surprise surprise to hear the "squirrel chirps and wails" of saw-whet owls this early in the season.  Previous early captures include 10/20/2005 (forest ranch), 10/2 (forest ranch) and 10/11/2006 (BCCER), and 10/17 (forest ranch) and 10/26/2007 (BCCER).  Thinking the storm might have stirred up some activity, I was really unsure of what our results would be.  Under clear skies we captured 2 NSWO and 1 pallid bat (see pic from M. Fisher).  We had several flocks of white-fronted geese overhead (owls detections seem to correlate with migrating geese and swans), and detections of pygmy, screech and great-horned owls. Liam and I saw a gray fox on the road.

Owls continue to be captured at the upper site, but in few numbers. Last year Tim Manolis and I emailed regarding the likelihood of NSWO wintering in the valley.  I used that info last night and moved closer to the valley, banding at the BCEP.  After 5 minutes of broadcast, NSWO responded.  Our first net run produced 3 owls- with an additional bird vocalizing in the canopy. Several flocks of tundra swans flew overhead both nights.  Comet Holmes is still visible.

Garcia/Nelson,

Owling has slowed since the 14-nighter on 11-4.  The subsequent banding attempts/capture results were:

11/5- 4 owls
11/6- 6 owls
11/7-11/11 out of town, no banding
11/12- 2 owls
11/13 - 1 owl
11/14- 1 owl

We are up to 47 NSWO for the season (61 in 2006, 23 in 2005).  The five nights I did not band 11/7-11, could have continued to produce good numbers as they followed 3 high number nights of captures (14, 4, 6). I hope to remedy big gaps next season by having additional permitted banders

Tthe owl captures have been inconsistent in numbers, but last night was a real treat with a total of 14 owls (my biggest capture to date)!  Two were recaptures from this season.  One owl escaped as I approached the net and due to the rarity of same night recaps, this may have been owl #15.  They continued to call as I closed nets at 23:10.  I would have remained open but my husband, who had just returned from AK and was usurped at the airport and shuttled to the owl site, was exhausted.

Owls captured: 15 total captures: 12 new owls, 2 recaptures (1 originally banded 10/27/2007, recapped 10/31, #2 originally banded 10/31/2007), 1 escapee

Garcia/Nelson, Fisher, Patten- party of 6 raffle winners (thanks all!)

The previous night we had a party 10 (including banders) for a snow goose festival "owl night out" raffle winner and captured and detected only one NSWO.  The difference may be the distraction of 10 people vs 2, the temperature had drooped 10*F, and/or the owls just flew en mass last night. Also, I moved the nets to OWL3 which is only about a 100-200' drop downslope and proximate to a meadow, but may have better broadcast function.  And I'm thinking the temperature may be cooler in the canyon at night- so perhaps the birds descend and roost there.  More speculation.... We are at 33 new owls since our first captures on October 17.  See attached pic by Nancy Nelson of NSWO post-release.

All, we had an excellent Altacal Audubon Society "Owlprowl" with 16 people including banders.  Mike Fisher lead the trip to the BCCER and was able to detect Northern Pygmy Owl and Western Screech Owl.  Then he brought the group up to the Northern Saw-whet Owl (NSWO) banding station where Julie and I had set up nets.  We were a bit concerned because our previous 7 attempts at the site resulted in no detections of NSWO at this site. But, the time had come and the little birds graced us with their presence.  While I talked about the project Julie checked the nets with Site Director Jeff Mott, and family Patty, and Grace and they brought back our first of the season NSWO- and a Pallid Bat!  What a perfect start to the owlprowl, under a full moon too!  We captured another NSWO before the group departed.  Julie and I stayed around another hour and captured 1 additional NSWO and a Western Screech Owl (WESO).

Hi all, we detected ZERO saw-whet owls (NSWO) tonight at BCCER ~1800'.  Just 2 nights ago at 3000' we had captured 2 NSWO and were hearing them.   I also had an email of a NSWO detection in Forest Ranch about 2 weeks age  Tonite was pretty perfect (calm winds, clear skies, high pressure) for owling but the moon was ~3/4 which makes nets more visible.  Still, no NSWO were heard in the area.   We don't have enough data to really ID what is happening but I can speculate on weather, prey base, poor reproductive year, a combo of those (and may still be wrong), etc., and is so interesting!

Several of us have gone out a few times this season to see if we can determine the migration route (or presence) of migrating flammulated (means little flame-colored thing) owls.  This species used to be sent to the local wildlife rehabber as they were hit by cars up near Forest Ranch.  They were heard in the summer through 1999 (indicating breeding) near our banding station in Forest Ranch.  I have still not heard or seen a one in the area for spring-summer-fall.

With the change in weather, I thought we might see some movement. We attempted last night (and Friday), but no Flams.  We did however, catch our first of the season N. Saw-whet owl (NSWO), and heard at least one other in the area. Owling nights will be sporadic until mid-October when I expect more activity.  Then I will post the outings and anyone is welcome. Following are the results from the last two outings.

WOW!  Mike Fisher and I had an amazing day.  We decided to fore go the passerine banding and went straight for Northern Pygmy Owl (NOPO).  We only did roadside surveys in assumed habitat, this time on the south road through the BCCER. We attempted to band two of these birds however they were not interested in our white mouse (or maybe mice in general) but appeared to be very intent on finding the intruder in their territory.  All birds came into the call within 3-7 minutes of interrupted broadcast. On Friday, surveying the north end in similar habitat we had NO responses-curious! From our banding and roadside only surveys we now know of 5 individual owls NOPO living along the west side of the creek.

Weather- AWESOME!  ~40-70*, light breeze, no clouds
NOPO surveys from 8:00-16:00 (left ranch between 11:30-13:30)
NOPO stops in assumed habitat (see photo): 6
NOPO responses (5, 2 from NSWO site) and visuals (3).
Other exciting visuals: Pacific-slope flycatcher-(PSFL) mobbing NOPO (for all you county listers I can give you GPS coordinates.)  Bird and owl were both along on east shore of Big Chico Creek.
Flock of 62 Sandhills
Several large flocks of snow and mixed greater white front geese.

Then we set up for NSWO in a new site below the barn (RIDGeline).  We wanted to see if this place is feasible for owl banding so we can have a permanent place for processing birds and future fund raising.

NSWO captured: 3 (2 recaps from 10/31) and one new male

Much to our surprise- we turned the NSWO tape at 18:00 at dusk.  Almost immediately a NOPO began calling and stayed in the area for about 20 minutes-in the trees around the lure.  A faint NOPO response came from the south (this may have been one we got a response from earlier in the day at a location ~.4 mile to the southwest).  Interestingly, we had tried this spot for NOPO at 8:30 am and had no responses.
NSWO came in quiet and the 2 recaps were caught on the first run.  Both SY/F.  NSWO began vocalizing later in the evening. No other owls were heard.

2 NSWO - 1 SY/F and 1SY/U (SY/F originally banded on 10/31/05 as HY/F and recaptured 2X since.)

We heard a male WESO calling and on the next net run had "Cinco" in the net.  This bird could be a male, but unlike most other NA owls, this species does not show much dimorphism.
We heard at least 2 individual NSWO calling occasionally during our broadcast.  One was a tooting male.  The measurements of the Unknown sexed bird we captured falls right on the border between the sexes.  The bird was quite small though and could be the tooting bird that we heard.

HI all, we have occasionally been trying to call in NOrthern Pygmy Owls, during our NSWO project.  We have had three respond to broadcast calls.  This one was at the Sumner's Reach (SURE) site at the BCCER,  down by Big Chico Creek.  We were fortunate to capture and band this petite owl on our first attempt.  It is of unknown sex and age.  Notice the "eyespots" on the back of the head (they are a bit ruffled), and how tiny these bird's are.  I have included a photo of the bird in the tree- tiny size and brown cryptic plumage can make these birds difficult to see.  Thank you Mike Fisher and Jennifer Patten for your help-lucky volunteers today!

We set up just at dark to attempt to capture the NOPO (NOrthern Pygmy Owl) as it has successfully avoided us in the past-flying all around the nets but not in them. I even put a NOPO like stuffed owl near the broadcaster.  A little tooter (likely female due to high pitch) came around form about 20 minutes, but never hit a net.  Clever little birds!  The NSWO was one that we captured nearly a month before at the same location and is likely a resident (winter and/or year-round).  Stayed open till 22:00 but heard no more birds.  The NSWO have either passed through or are still at higher elevations since we have had no big storms to bring them down.
