SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER:
Dr. Michael Mesler
"Stories from pollination heaven:
35 years of studying flowers and pollinators
at Humboldt State University"

***************************************************************

Dr. Mesler will talk about some of the work that he and his students have done over the years, including studies of the pollination of wild gingers, trillium, slinkpods, calochortus, iris, iliamna, darlingtonia, and silene. Fungus gnats, beetles, long-proboscid flies, and native bees will be the main pollinators in the stories. Dr. Mesler will focus on the glorious details, but will also discuss some of the general lessons that emerge from the details.

Dr. Mesler did his graduate work at University of Michigan in plant morphology and fern life cycles (grape and adder's tongue ferns). He has taught at Humboldt State University since 1975: plant taxonomy, undergraduate pollination biology, graduate plant-animal interactions. He has had about 50 graduate students. Dr. Mesler has some research experience in the tropics (euglossine bees in Panama, coffee pollination in Jamaica), but most of his work has been done in northwest California and southwest Oregon. He is The Jepson Manual author for Asarum, Ribes, and Prosartes.
