Introduction to Keying the Fabaceae .

May 10 , 2008.

by John Dittes .

The pea, or legume, family (Fabaceae) is a diverse, ecologically important, and agriculturally significant plant group. With approximately 650 genera and 18,000 species worldwide, the legumes also provide ample challenge to plant taxonomists. In Vern Oswald’s 2002 treatment for Northern California, 29 genera, 166 species and 26 varieties are recorded (“Selected Plants of Northern California and Adjacent Nevada”).

As such, the Fabaceae, as represented in northern California, presents an opportunity to examine the morphology of the family and taxonomic features that are used to circumscribe genera and species. Emphasis will be placed on Lathyrus, Lotus, Lupinus, Trifolium, and Vicia, although other native and non-native genera will be addressed as well. Fresh and pressed specimens, mostly from Butte and adjacent counties, will be provided for participants to key as a group and as individuals.

This workshop will be led by John Dittes, local botanical consultant and expert on the northern California flora. The workshop is appropriate for both beginners and the more advanced botanist wishing to increase familiarity with the group and to brush up on keying skills. Some of the basic equipment is available to loan to workshop participants, but if you have any of the following items please bring them: hand lens, forceps (tweezers), dissecting needle, 6 " millimeter ruler, and The Jepson Manual (please let us know what you need to borrow).

The workshop will meet Saturday, May 10, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Holt Hall room 129 at CSU Chico. The registration fee is $70.00 personal, $100.00 business ($60.00 for members of Friends of the Herbarium). Please register in advance; class size is limited to 16 participants (class cancelled without a minimum of 5 participants). For more information about workshop content please contact John Dittes or Josephine Guardino at (530) 384-1774 or <jcdittes@sbcglobal.net>.
