Biology Student Computer Lab (Holt 253)
Gordon Wolfe, manager
Use of the computer lab
The lab is open to all registered biology students. Graduate students who plan to use the lab frequently should request a key from the department secretary. Undergraduate students using the lab for biology classes or independent research should ask their instructors about access. If not reserved for class use, the lab is open on a first-come, first-served basis. Please check the lab for a posted weekly schedule.
Please use the lab for class or research-related use only. Help us maintain the facility in good working condition!
Facilities
The lab currently has PCs and Macs all networked and with laser printing services.
Saving your work: the network computers shut down each night at midnight and restart at 7 am. When they restart, they delete any files not included as programs or system files. Therefore, NEVER leave your files on the computer hard drives, but always copy them to Zip disks or floppies before you leave!
Graphics: One of the PCs is set up as a graphics center, with slide scanner and recorder, a paper scanner and a high-quality inkjet printer, and a CD-ROM burner. This equipment is invaluable for making posters and presentations. See the blue binder next to the graphics center for instructions for use.
Printing: Printing is currently free and on an honor system. Please limit the amount of paper, toner, and ink you use. The department can only pay for limited supplies! The inkjet paper and ink are especially expensive, so use them only when really necessary!
Software: The Macs have Microsoft Office only. The PCs have the following software:
- MS Word
- MS Excel
- MS PowerPoint
- MS FrontPage
- MS Access
- ArcView (GIS)
- Pathfinder Office (GPS)
- Photoshop
- PageMaker
- SigmaPlot
- Graphics PC
- Graphics PC
- SAS 8.0
- SPSS
- EndNote 4.0
