We live in a time that demands personal and interpersonal growth. We are confronted with intolerance, inhumanity and violence spawned by hate. A synagogue is fire-bombed; an ethnic slur is painted on a wall; a gay couple is murdered. We must as individuals and as a community find ways and means to act positively. Today, a new awareness of our diversity as people is the acknowledged reality of the United States; all of us must live and work in a society that is multicultural and global. This reality is a challenge and an opportunity, a necessity and an exciting new venture. This series of events has as its goal to bring together our campus -- as well as reach out to other colleges and universities, K-12 schools, the interfaith community, government, and business and social leaders -- to build bridges of support to reject intolerance, promote mutual respect and celebrate our growing diversity. The organizers of Building Bridges welcome all to participate in personal and interpersonal crossings into the rich diversity of the human experience and promise knowledge and fulfillment as the reward. "We simply cannot enter the 21st Century at each
other's throats, even as we acknowledge the weighty forces of racism,
patriarchy, economic inequality, homophobia, and ecological abuse on our
necks. We are at a crucial crossroad in the history of this nation --
and we either hang together by combating these forces that divide us and
degrade us or we hang separately. Do we have the intelligence, humor,
imagination, courage, tolerance, love, respect, and will to meet the challenge?
Time will tell." Cornell West "Race Matters" |
