Bridge of Respect Project

"Resolved that the Academic Senate hereby reaffirms its commitment to a variety of educational experiences in an atmosphere that encourages the university community to examine moral and ethical issues and to be helpful instead of hateful, tolerant instead of bigoted, respectful instead of disrespectful, and peaceful instead of violent..."

Academic Senate Resolution on Encouraging Tolerance and Respect Passed March 18, 1999

"I'm pleased to report that next fall and spring the university will be sponsoring a number of events, celebrations, and conversations with a theme of "Building Bridges." These activities--events such as art exhibits, public forums, or addresses by guest speakers--are designed to stretch our sensibilities and create common ground between people so that we are better able to appreciate individual differences and confront acts of hate."

President Manuel Esteban In letter to campus community,
Feb. 29, 2000

"Someone must have the vision of what it can be like if, in fact, you start building bridges. I want everybody to hear this: Don't ever put yourself down about what you can't do. You may be the very one. You may be the very one who can do this, who can make it happen, who can pull it off, you may be the very one."

Rev. Cecil Williams, pastor, Glide Memorial Church in San Francisco
Aug. 30, 2000, Harlan Adams Theatre
    Building Bridges kick-off event
"When we build bridges over the divides that separate us, those bridges we build out of friendship and love and acceptance…. My wife is a weaver, she weaves beautiful tapestry, and looking at various colors of yarn in the loom it really dawned on me that if she made that tapestry just with one color it couldn't be as beautiful as what she made together from all those different colors. That's the kind of binding together that we've always been known for, the melting pot of all people from every sphere. It's a beautiful dream, it's a beautiful plan, it hasn't always worked perfectly, but it's there. No other nation on earth that I know of has such a beginning and such a beautiful future ahead. We can truly learn to love one another."
Morris Dees, co-founder, Southern Poverty Law Center
    March 13, 2001, Laxson Auditorium
    Building Bridges keynote address

"
