Social Science

The Social Science major includes 2 patterns, breadth and depth. Students choosing the depth pattern select 2 of 23 possible concentrations; thus the selection of combinations is quite large and variable and allows students to create specialized niches. Career possibilities are quite variable as well, depending upon the unique combination of concentrations. There is less variation among students taking the breadth pattern of classes. Many of these students are planning to become junior high and high school social science teachers.

Our undergraduate students in both patterns are encouraged to do internships with the types of organizations that they might like to work in the future, whether public agencies, private companies, nonprofits, or educational institutions. Likewise, our graduate students are encouraged to do internships for 3 units of graduate credit, and most do take advantage of this opportunity. Many of our students do internships on campus, but a variety of community organizations, including those listed below, have offered internship opportunities to social science students.
